I dress like a boy because I feel like boys are generally more comfortable than women, said Ali Tenenbaum the other day, sitting at a West Village coffee shop and wearing a typical outfit of black Hudson jeans, blue J. Crew cardigan, yellow T-shirt and designer sneakers. Ms. Tenenbaum, 38 (whose family was the inspiration for the Wes Anderson film The Royal Tenenbaums, though she said the actual resemblance is slight), has unfussy brown hair that falls to several inches above her shoulders, and clear, radiant skin. She doesnt wear makeup. She is a professional photo organizer who meets with her (largely) Upper East Side clientele wearing sneakers. Sometimes it throws them off a bit, but then I charm them and theyre fine with it! she said.
It was just a few years ago that everyone was nattering about the metrosexual, the New York man who, though straight, loved his Kiehls and Thomas Pink tattersall shirts and is addicted to Greys Anatomy. Less discussed has been his female counterpart: gals who, while not lesbians, dress like guys (young guys), well into their 30s; who leap into games of pickup basketball with male friends while the rest of us watch wanly from the sidelines; who affect a wry detachment from their sexs conventional concerns of shoe-shopping, man-hunting and family. Think of the comedienne Sarah Silverman, mugging and shrugging and strumming her way through an Im F*cking Matt Damon video, a birthday gift to her boyfriend, ABC talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel. Or matter-of-fact Juno actress Ellen Page. Or surly pop star Avril Lavigne.
And these gals are everywhere in New York. Urbane tomboys in $200 jeans, they wear sneakers to the office or the studio (they probably work in a creative industry).

The article only comes with one photo and it is a lame one. A waste of a click.
I resemble that remark.
She is a “professional photo organizer”. What the heck is that?
She’s a pix fix.
Okay, I’ve read the whole thing and it sounds a lot like me - in fact, it sounds like a lot of conservative women. We don’t buy into the Cult of Makeup and Insecurity. Although I do care about my appearance and spend a lot of time in the gym.
I own 8 pair of 13MWZ’s, 1 pair of 20X’s and a couple of suits.
Anyone that pays over $23.99 for a pair of jeans is a buffoon. Caveat, women buying Cruel Girl traditional cut jeans, hubba hubba.
The world would be a better-looking place if men looked like men and women like women. Also, androgny rarely leads to a more polite society. If you can’t tell the ladies from the men, how are you supposed to give up a bus seat to the ladies?
On the other hand, people can do what they want.
Well...Personally, I love the thrift shops!
Recently, I found a marvelous ostrich leather skirt, and an almost new Columbia ski jacket.
In our religion we don’t gamble,,,but,,,I think thrift shop hunting is the closest thing to “Christian” gambling! :-)
I work for a large Aerospace company and I can’t believe how the young women, straight out of college dress for work. To me they look like slobs wearing something you’d clean out your basement in. I wear jeans plenty of times to work but usually with a little jewelry, a little makeup and jacket. Honestly, I think it’s sad.
Avril Lavigne wears heavy duty makeup.
I work in the photo dept. of a camera shop. Work clothing is usually jeans for me- comfy and practical, since I don’t want to wear anything that I’d hate to ruin with chemistry- but I never look like a slob. I always wear enough makeup to look polished ( and to not frighten off my clients :) )
You know, if you put on some heels and pearls like June Cleaver, you’d look real sexy with that Uzi. :)
My boyfriend tells me I look sexy without heels and pearls. Anyway, I can’t go to work dressed like June Cleaver. It’s against FAA regulations.
I bet if you were to dress up in Heels and Pearls, and nothing but Heels and Pearls, he might consider that a sexy look too.
This is dumb. I still wear jeans, t-shirts and tennis shoes. Fashion maven I’m not, but I am a bit old now for pickup basketball games.
