Some mornings I wake up and, for a minute or two, I think that I must have been dreaming that there are conservatives who hate John McCain so much that, come November, they intend to stay home and let Bill Clinton’s wife or Jeremiah Wright’s surrogate nephew become president of the United States. But then I realize it’s not a dream, and that’s when the nightmare really begins.
Recently, I wrote a piece in which I stated a few of the reasons why I think McCain should be elected. I ended with a notion for a bumper-sticker: “Better an Imperfect Republican Than a Perfect Socialist”. But, still, I heard from a number of disgruntled right-wingers who vowed not to sully their principles by helping to elect a candidate they regarded as indistinguishable from Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
I will repeat for the rest of you what I replied to these people. Granted, I don’t agree with Sen. McCain about amnesty for illegal aliens. But his position is no worse than that of the Democrats, and at least I’m confident that he’s opposed to the illegals having the right to vote in our elections. Democrats, as we all know, are for universal suffrage -- and that includes felons locked up in jails and people buried in cemeteries.
On the plus side of the ledger, McCain has never voted to increase taxes. Initially, he voted against Bush’s tax cuts, but that was because he wanted them tied to cuts in spending. However, when he lost that battle, he voted to make the tax cuts permanent. He is also leading the fight against earmarks.
This man, whom some conservatives regard as a RINO or even a closet liberal, is pro-life, pro...

Jimmy Carter in a McCain suit.
Yep! We really have a dilemma on our hands, don't we?
Only if he appoints a legitimate conservative to the bottom of the ticket. If he appoints Graham or DeWine, I vote third party.
Just a few months ago I never dreamed in a million years that I would look forward to voting for John McCain. But these issues alone make him worthy of my vote. And She Who Shall Not Be Named or OsamaObama are unthinkable alternatives.
He may be a “maverick,” but he’s not insane. He wants to win, so I don’t think he’d be foolish enough to pick Graham or DeWine. Maybe Chris Cox, maybe Romney for economic reasons...maybe even Sarah Palin, who’s quite conservative but geographically challenged. But not a Graham-type.
Prayerfully, those who are threatening to stay home in November will have a change of heart when they see the “real” B. Hussein Osama-Obama in the GE Campaign and Debates.
The worst political mistake of my life was voting for Ross Perot in ‘92. Because of me, and millions of other pissed off Pubbies, we now have the Clintons for life.
No matter who wins, it's a victory for the rats.
Bless you!!!
I’ve always identified myself as a Republican, and have almost always voted the Republican ticket. It has really been driven home to me in the last few election cycles that I am not necessarily a Republican, rather I am a conservative who has been voting Republican. I remain a conservative that has held my nose and voted for a stinky candidate for the last time.
Thanks for your statement.
I had a good friend who had similar regrets and anxious moments. He passed away and is unable to deliver his thoughts today to those who oppose McCain and have zealot principles.
“He may be a maverick, but hes not insane.”
He is also an unstable individual with a monstrous ego and an almost fetishistic perversion for going out of his way to piss-off conservatives.
What side of his addled brain will win?
WORST. REPUBLICAN. CANDIDATE. EVER.
Are you concerned about succession, either during the first term or after Senator McCain retires?
Bless YOU, no dems!
I think that’s a good point too!
Sadly, there's a good percentage of the electorate which would probably prefer the latter.
I don’t hate McCain, I just won’t vote for him. He can’t be trusted. You all know his record and I’m not going to repeat it here except to say he took real pleasure in sticking his thumb in the eye of conservatives for many years.
Look at his “best friends” in the Senate: Feingold, Kennedy, Graham, yes...Clinton. If you think he’s going to be a better president for protecting our borders go ahead and vote for him.
If he wins he will sell us out in a nano-second and his media will protray it as a great act of courage.
I will vote third party.
Good points, Bernard. McCain should really be in a position to pick a VP that strengthens his appeal with the general electorate.
