Kate Walsh: Abstinence-Only "Not Working" Cites One-In-Four Teen Girl STDs Rate In U.S. As Proof Fed-Sponsored Sex Ed Needs Broadening

March 28, 2008

Kate Walsh on The Early Show Friday (CBS/EARLY SHOW) (CBS) Actress Kate Walsh is pushing for federal sex education programs to teach strategies beyond abstinence-only.

Walsh, who played a doctor on "Grey's Anatomy" and stars in its spin-off, "Private Practice," is a member of the board of advocates of Planned Parenthood, and went to Capitol Hill Thursday to take part in a congressional briefing on sex education.

She's been lobbying for sex ed to include birth control and the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.

On The Early Show Friday, Walsh told co-anchor Julie Chen, "Abstinence-only is not working. It's a $1.5 billion program over the last ten years that has, quite frankly, failed. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) reported that one-in-four teenage girls (in the US) between the ages of 14 and 19 are infected with STIs (sexually transmitted infections), and that, to me, is appalling and shameful. And in the age of information, these women are just not getting adequate information."

Walsh says there's urgent need for a change in the way sex ed funds are appropriated: "In addition to abstinence, which is fine, there just needs to be a comprehensive sex education program, and we can't be relying on, you know, private foundations or parents or, you know, teens' peers to be educating each other. We really do need government help on this.

"It's a shame to me that we spend money on educating our kids on history, math, science, English literature, and we can't educate them sexually. And it's proof in these statistics. It's just shameful to me that, in our country, that these young women are being infected because they honestly just don't have the information.

"Abstinence is one aspect of sex education," Walsh continued, "but it is not the complete aspect. And to expect, I think, everybody to remain abstinent, it's like asking them not to grow. It's like we don't ask people to not try out for sports. We don't ask people to stop learning. It's just a natural human process, and we need to be educating people. If abstinence-only did work, we wouldn't be seeing these kinds of statistics. We wouldn't be seeing these young women suffering like this."

Walsh PLAYS a doctor on TV (a particularly slutty one, if I recall), so now she uses that role "cred" to push Planned Parenthood on us. It is so bad that she was actually testifying in the "Stand Up For Real Sex Education" congressional briefing in Washington D.C.

Sorry, but memorizing some medical terms and then getting nailed by the next doctor in line on your TV show does not qualify you to be an expert on much of anything except memorizing lines.

Amazingly, she states ""It's a shame to me that we spend money on educating our kids on history, math, science, English literature, and we can't educate them sexually. And it's proof in these statistics. It's just shameful to me that, in our country, that these young women are being infected because they honestly just don't have the information."

No, they get infected because they are having sex. And I don't recall our educational system being particularly successful on teaching our kids history, math, science, English literature, so why should we beleive that they can educate them sexually?

If you aren't promoting abstinence, you are promoting promiscuity.

More: And to expect, I think, everybody to remain abstinent, it's like asking them not to grow. It's like we don't ask people to not try out for sports. We don't ask people to stop learning. It's just a natural human process, and we need to be educating people."

In other words, sex is like sports, and everyone should try out, or we are like the animals, and have no control over our baser instincts. Gee, thanks "Doctor" Walsh!

Even more: "If abstinence-only did work, we wouldn't be seeing these kinds of statistics. We wouldn't be seeing these young women suffering like this." I think Rush Limbaugh said it best: "Abstinence works every time it is tried."

The remark is ignorant on its face: abstinence would absolutely prevent this suffering, if only we didn't have PP and other liberal abortion enthusiasts pushing "safe sex" and easy abortions to "fix your problems," and liberal music, television and movie outlets hypersexualizing our kid before they hit puberty.

She is a PPFA Board of Advocates (BOA) member.

Someone should remind this idiot that she only pretends to be a doctor in her nine-to-five job. Another million-dollar body with a five cent brain!

Yeah....teaching children about sex has really worked....the definition of stupidity....doing the same thing over and over and expecting to get a different result.

“I’m not a doctor, but I play one on TV.”

“I am famous, therefore, I am smart.”

Take your pick.

Was that before or after he abstained from oxycontin?

With one notable exception, abstinence has worked every time.

So much money wanted just to tell kids if they have sex they have a good chance of getting pregnant (girs) or a STD.

Girls restrooms have been notorious for having always questionable toilet seats that are responsible for the transmission of STD's and pregnancies.

I guess being a fictional doctor doesn't give you any real credentials, otherwise Kate Walsh would know that HPV is the most common STD occuring in about 26% of women... wait a minute, 26%? Didn't the article quote say that STD rate in women is about 1 in 4? So in other words, it's at the rate of HPV infection, no doubt because HPV is the most common STD!

Why does this matter? It matters because the spread of HPV isn't stopped by condoms, the pill, or even abortion! Skin to skin contact of the pubic area is all it takes, condoms be d*mned.

“Was that before or after he abstained from oxycontin?”

Well, you try having a major ear operation (remember earaches? Try multiplying that several fold) and tell me how well you avoid getting hooked on a addictive painkiller.

And yes, as mentioned above, abstinence from oxycontin does work every time it is tried.

So what is your point?

Nice drive-by post... but the answer is obvious. Abstinence worked for him in this case too.

And how many of those who did abstain ended up catching those STIs? Oh, and since when have they changed it from STD to STI???
