Florida Sen. Nelson Proposes Scrapping Electoral College In Reform Package

In a state that has seen its share of electoral problems this decade, Florida’s senior Sen. Bill Nelson made a rare appearance before the state Senate Thursday to unveil sweeping federal election reform legislation that would eliminate the Electoral College. As the state now wrestles with the national Democratic Party to find a solution to seat its 210 delegates at this year’s presidential nominating convention, Nelson noted that “the solution is very elusive,” but that, “If nothing else, this election has provided further evidence that our system is broken.” The Democratic senator, who sued the Democratic National Committee and Chairman Howard Dean last year for stripping Florida of all its delegates, in his reform bill proposes eliminating the Electoral College and giving American citizens direct election of their presidents by popular vote.

Florida Sen. Nelson Proposes Scrapping Electoral College In Reform Package is dumb enough to think he's smarter than James Madison

There is not one person in Washington, DC right now who can be trusted to tinker with the system established by our nation's founders.

Bill wants to have California, New York, Illinois and the other small left-wing anti-American states elect the Democrat dictators so the rest of us will be under the yore of pro Communist scum.

The reason for the electoral College was for the purpose of making sure all states had a say and not just the most populated as is California with illegal aliens who will run the country if this becomes part of the Constitution.

Repeal the 17th Amendment so we can get some real Americans in the US Senate.

If they remove the electoral college they should get rid of the senate too. If they want a true democracy there’s no need for the senate.

Going to college, getting a degree and becoming an astronaut doesn't make you smart any more than going into a barn makes you a horse. There are A LOT of folks with very high achievements in academia who can't tie their own shoes, figuratively speaking. I've met and worked with a lot of folks who fit that description.....brilliantly book smart, but dumb as a rock when it comes to what used to be called "common sense".....

And we want the democrats, who phuck-up so badly with their Florida and Michigan mess now, to redesign our electoral system...no thanx...The dems want proportional wins in their primaries and this is how Obama get his unusually large share of pledged delegates...if the dems are using the Rep. rules, the Hildabeast would be in the clear lead after “her” wins in Ohio and Texas.

The beauty of the Electoral college is that it (somewhat) deters politicians from pandering to the most populous parts of the country while ignoring the backwaters. I think Nelson from Nebraska proposed this. Makes me wonder, ‘cause Nebraska would be ignored even more than it already is under his proposal.

Being a NH resident I do not want to see us loose the "1st in the Nation Primary" to fit the way the Libs want it to?

Maybe the conservative red Southern states are tired of RINO's being picked year after year. I have said over and over on FR that a Southern Democrat, like Zell Miller or Mary Landrieau is always more conservative than a Northern Republican like Jeffords. Why let the liberal Northeast ever pick our nominee again, I wonder, we will get a RINO every time. If we want a true conservative Republican nominee, the first states to vote in the primary should be: Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma with probably Utah, Alaska, and the Dakotas voting soon after.

Oh yeah...so NY,CA,FL,NJ could choose the President for the rest of the USA. I’m sure all the states with mid-to-small populations will really go for that.
I thought astronauts had to be intelligent, but apparently not.

Bill Nelson is dumb enough to think he’s smarter than Al Gore..... Between him and Mel we should just scrap the senate as well, after all the Electoral College system was set up to mirror the legistlative branch.. Whats good for the goose is good for the dumbass senator.

Come on man, let it go!

The dims don't get over ANY election they lose. They think being in power is their birthright. If I really replied with my thoughts about the dims, either my reply would look like this:

This will be one of the results of a Dem controlling the WH and Congress. This, plus the Fairness Doctrine.

You are correct, this is not an amendment. BUT, they will find ways around this - as some states already have. They will lean on states to adopt a rule that instructs their electors to cast their votes for the winner of the national popular vote - not the winner of their state’s popular vote.

Remember, the constitution does NOT specify that electors have to vote as pledged.

This is at the core of my tag line, and why this election is not like the election of Carter. If we hand this election to Obama, it will NOT beget the second coming of Reagan - it will be the death of America as we know it.

Excellent point. why is this so difficult for dems to understand?
If we allow the larger states to pick the president, we would be living in a tyrrany similar to that of the one we revolted against back then.

Times like this make me wish I lived in Texas.
