Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama suggested Wednesday that Jesus Christ is not the only way to heaven during a campaign event in North Carolina.
While answering a question about his Christian faith, Obama said he believes that Jesus Christ died for his sins and through Gods grace and mercy he could have everlasting life, according to the Los Angeles Times.
But he also believes Jews and Muslims and non-believers who live moral lives are as much children of God as he is, according to The Associated Press.
As an example, he spoke about his late mother who was not a believer.
"[S]he was the kindest, most decent, generous person that I have ever known," Obama said, according to the Times. "I'm sure she is in heaven, even though she may not have subscribed to everything that I subscribe to."
Obamas response amid the recent controversy surrounding his former Chicago pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who made inflammatory remarks about race and America in sermons he delivered many years ago.
The Illinois senator, who has made religion a cornerstone of his campaign, has denounced the comments which included God damn America for its racism but refuses to distance himself from the pastor, whom he compares to an uncle.
During his response on Wednesday, Obama praised his church, Trinity United Church of Christ, especially its choir, and said it was very warm and welcoming and is like any other church in America in that it exists to praise God.

Again, GOD is NOT the one doing the torturing. The concept of Hell is eternal separation *from* God.
I don’t know why that’s such a hard concept to grasp for some, but there you go...
The cross goes both ways. His sacrifice saved the ones before him who lived as God wanted them to. The ones after Christ died, must follow the scripture and obey His Word and all that entails in order to be saved.
Didn't the President say that Christians and Muslims worship the same God?
Is President Bush going to Hell for contradicting scripture?
Half truth there- He ommited the part where his church damns whitey for the suffering of blacks.
But, if the hypothetical is directly answered in scripture, as quoted previously, one must choose on the side of scripture. This assumes, of course, that you accept the premise of Sola Scriptura, and recognize it's divine inspiration. As Paul told Timothy, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:"
I personally believe there are many paths to the Lord's Kingdom -- folks may not realize there is but One God, Jesus Christ. They may not be permitted to worship Him.
I certainly would not be so stupid as to say 'all Buddhists are going to hell' or 'all Hindus are going to hell' or even 'all Muslims are going to hell'. I'm sure George W Bush doesn't believe that, either.
Origen is the origin of many a heresy. Rev 20:15 "And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." Guess that bout reconciles that.
Are those two different standards?
Could you behave differently and be saved or sent to hell depending on the time of your birth?
I didn’t say anything about Buddhists going to hell. I said Obama and Michael Medved are going to burn in hell together if they don’t accept Jesus Christ as the path to salavation.
Eternal separation from God makes it sound much more benign than a waiting Satan ready to boil you for eternity. In other words, the concept of Satan does not make sense, if one is to believe the concept of God.
That was the torture I was referring to.
President Bush has accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. Michael Medved and perhaps also Obama have not. That’s all that matters.
He is either doing it or allowing it. He's the Boss!
It's those pesky consequences again!
Did He or did He not know from the Beginning that the vast majority of human beings would suffer those consequences eternally, at least according to your understanding of Christian mythology?
These 'Christian' people who are casting stones here on this thread are saying their sins have been washed by Christ's blood on the cross and it seems they can do say or act anyway they wish on account of it.
For the sake of discussion, while in Christian school, did you study Jesus' dialogue with Nicodemus in John chapter 3? If so, what did you understand it to mean? If not, would you care to read it now (takes 5 minutes) and comment?
Of course, Paul told this to Timothy 500 years before there was a New Testament. Surely Paul was referring to the "scripture" as Jesus Christ referred it. Scripture provides my only access to God. However, I don't reject the possibility that God has other means of access to me, and to unbelievers.

Your implication is Buddhists will go to hell. Obama won't.
I have about as much respect for Bill as Obama.
You could be right about Obama. It’s really not my job to judge him because he has accepted Jesus Christ. Medved, though, is a goner if he doesn’t clean up his act and accept Jesus. And I don’t think he’s going to because he does too much talking and not enough listening.
He knows what Scripture says, and he told the entire world something directly contradictory. Is that Kosher?
