House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has reaffirmed her position that superdelegates should not overturn the will of the voters in the face of criticism from top donors to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.).
The Speaker believes it would do great harm to the Democratic Party if superdelegates are perceived to overturn the will of the voters, Pelosi spokesman Brendan Daly said in a statement late Wednesday.
This has been her position throughout this primary season, regardless of who was ahead at any particular point in delegates or votes.
In a letter first reported Wednesday on talkingpointsmemo.com, 20 top Hillary fundraisers and donors blasted Pelosi for saying that when the presidential nominating contest nears its conclusion, superdelegates should support whoever leads in pledged delegates.
They cited remarks she made to ABCs This Week with George Stephanopoulos on March 16.
We respect those voters and believe that they, like the voters in the states that have already participated, have a right to be heard. None of us should make declarative statements that diminish the importance of their voices and their votes, the letter said.
Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) leads Clinton in pledged delegates.
The letter says that its signers have been strong supporters of the DCCC, or the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which is in charge of electing Democratic House members.
It concludes by saying they hope you will be responsive to some of your major enthusiastic supporters.
The Obama campaign called that a threat against the campaign to keep and expand the Democratic majority in the House.
This letter is inappropriate and we hope the Clinton campaign will reject the insinuation contained in it. Regardless of the outcome of the nomination fight, Sen. Obama will continue to urge his supporters to assist Speaker Pelosi in her efforts to maintain and build a working majority in the House of Representatives, said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton.
But wasn’t overturning the ‘will of the voters’ the whole point of superdelegates? They were instituted in hope of preventing another McGovern debacle precisely because the demonRAT base is sometimes so out of step with the country as a whole that it hurts their party.
Quote: “I’m waiting for them to fall fighting into the fountain, like what happened on Dynasty...”
LOL, you made me choke on my cheese curls!!
I think Pelosi has had her fill of kissing up to the Clintons and she’s not gonna’ take it any more....especially since she is now in a position to ‘hand it out’.
Whaddaya expect from those "garlic nosed" Italians.
Except for blacks, is there any ethnic group that has not been dissed by Obama's followers yet?
That was it ... if superdelegates can't overturn the "will of the voters", there's no point to having superdelegates.
Pelosi doesn’t realize the purpose of the superdelegates. They exist for the DNC to make sure the final choice is acceptable to the DNC. Why have them otherwise?
Couldn’t have said it better.
They will never concede, they will never accept defeat, they will scorch the earth before they surrender.
The end is not the end with the Clintons. Never has been.
Remember how awful things were when their idiot surrogate Algore couldn’t win the presidency (couldn’t win his home state)? Imagine what they will do when it involves Clinton him/herself.
Heard the news story just today of one of the 7 superdelegates from Cuba who recently endorsed Obama. He was just indicted for one thing or another, and I have absolutely no doubt that the Clinton operatives caused the stir. (Not to say whether the guy deserved it or not—after all he IS a dem—but this is the kind of thing the evil pair will do.)
I expect several prominent Obama-leaning superdelegates to be sacrificed very soon, and the unmistakeable cloven hoofprint of the Clintons will be all over the incidents—or disappearances!
If I were an investigative reporter, I’d be tearing into this angle, because I truly believe it’s happening with many of those poor dem souls right now! But unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be any reporters who want to win Pulitzers anymore... or maybe these worthless reporters just prefer staying alive to taking on the Beast and the Evil Teensy Bent One.
Its not just superdelegates that Hillary wants. There was a post on another website that said Hillary is trying to flip some of Barack's pledged delegates. If she does that, there won't be enough popcorn left in the entire galaxy.
I’m trying to figure out just how she thinks she controls super delegates and their votes? Me thinks I might know who won’t be speaker next term. LOL
thinbk it just leaves hispanics
what is doing my head in that the media will not call any of them racist yet if a white man said all these things and was associated with the likes of this rev he would be called to step down from his senate seat
the double standereds is amazing
even chris matthews saying he did a great speech and we should all be made to listen to it
a man with racist connections and views is telling us we should look at race and some buy into it
amazing
What Hillary needs is a good Reischtag fire.
The odds of that outcome are on par with the odds of BHO asking for the $27k back that he donated to Rev Wright.
Rev Wright's hate church is on the moral equivalence of a white separatist church in northern Idaho.
If the nomination must be given to the one with the most votes - then the Super Delegate system is super-fluous.
Since most of the voting thus far was BEFORE the sh*t hit the fan and the truth about obamama has come out - there are a lot of voters who would, according to the polls, vote differently today...isn't that the premise for SDs?
ole peeeelosi - why does she think SHE is the one who makes the decision?
Oh, right. I keep forgetting. She is Queen of the Realm. I'm sure her worst nightmare is to 'serve' under the hilderbeast/
MA too. Heavy Italian population.
Ah, make that "Except for blacks who hold to the Black Liberation Theology. The rest are "Uncle Toms"
think a poll showed that if obama went against McCain then it;s a dead heat right now
My mother in law and wife come from there, the mother in law still is there, always voted for the dems though she has no idea what she’s voting for
anyway
she said she would never vote for obama
What exactly is the purpose of these super-delegates then in the first place?
democrats, A bunch of friggin fruit loops the whole lot of them.
