An armed man continues to keep authorities at bay on the Walt Whitman Bridge.
The Walt Whitman Bridge between South Philadelphia and Gloucester City, N.J., has been closed since about 4:30 p.m.
New Jersey State Police Capt. Al Della Fave says troopers tried to stop a vehicle for a minor speeding violation, but the driver wouldn't pull over. He says troopers stopped the pursuit after a few minutes because the man was driving erratically and police feared someone would get hurt. After that, the driver stopped on the bridge.
State police say the driver got out of the car and smashed the windows.
He's believed to be armed with a gun and a baseball bat and he has a woman and baby with him.
Delaware River Port Authority police have stopped traffic in both directions. Many vehicles are stuck.
We'll have more information as it becomes available.
Agreed!
Thanks for the heads up! Another great example of FReepers being right on top of breaking news...
You right. That what my husband said too.I would have shot him in the legs and gotten it over with.I am bad.
This was an even slower chase scene than OJ’s.
“They should all be allowed to reach out their windows and give him a smack as they drive by.”
ROTFL!
Earlier they reported that they were bringing a tour bus to them so they could use the bathroom!
Thanks. Hubby heard it on the CB and called me. SE Mom’s link to the live streaming really made this easy to follow.
There was a truck right there. Surely the driver could have lent him his milk carton.
Blast from college past!
“There was a truck right there. Surely the driver could have lent him his milk carton.”
hee-hee...
That truck was heading towards PA along with the SUV.
I’m talking about the cars that were heading to NJ from PA. There had to be about 50-75 cars at a standstill for those three hours. I’m not good at guessing the amount, but I couldn’t believe how many there were...three lanes across, before they started to turn around.
The NJ side made U-turns hours ago, but the eastbound ones were stuck. That’s when they reported that they were sending a tour bus to them.
Whew. So he's just playing, then.
I think the drivers on the Philly side had already paid the toll, but not the ones on the NJ side. I wonder if that $3 influenced their decision to turn around, or not.
IMHO, it’s not very difficult to go up or down I295 in NJ to another bridge, but it would be difficult to get back to I95 in Philly to go to another bridge. That may have been a deciding factor.
“Whew. So he’s just playing, then.”
Yeah...and a baseball bat... ;)
I wonder how many westbound drivers were heading to the airport.
That makes me think about this:
He's believed to be armed with a gun and a baseball bat...
Is having a baseball bat in one's possession really being "armed?"
I don’t know, but on any given day, there’s quite a bit of traffic in both directions on the bridges around here.

“I dont know, but on any given day, theres quite a bit of traffic in both directions on the bridges around here.”
Yes...especially at 4:30 heading east over the Walt Whitman. I used to dread coming off a flight and heading home to NJ at that time....bumper to bumper and barely crawling at 4:30 to around 5:30.
I hate those bridges, especially at rush hour. I can’t stand sitting on them, going nowhere. Especially the Commodore Barry Bridge, because of its poor construction.
Unfortunately, here in Iowa, we just experienced this a couple of days ago.
Local banker in a city about 50 miles from us got caught embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from his bank for his cocaine habit. He knew he was going down for a long time. Neighbors and friends and everybody described him as a very nice person and a perfect father.
He got up one morning and beat his wife and three kids to death with a couple of baseball bats. Sat down and wrote out a 4-page suicide note. Got in the family van loaded with gasoline and splattered/burned himself to death on the interstate by driving into a sign pillar.
Looks like the cops were standing around waiting for something to happen.
