Dad Allowed to Take Leave From Prison to See His Dying Little Girl
Thursday, March 27, 2008
OMAHA, Neb. A 10-year-old Nebraska girl with terminal brain cancer had a simple last wish: to have her dad by her side as she lay on her death bed.
On Wednesday, seemingly against all odds, Jayci Yaeger's wish came true.
Her father, Jason Yaeger, who has been locked up in a South Dakota federal prison on methamphetamine charges, was allowed to see his daughter for what may be the last time.
He was furloughed after a barrage of letters and phone calls from around the country convinced officials to let him visit the hospital, according to KETV.com.
Jayci, who cannot speak, move or eat, could sense that her father was next to her and feel his touch, because she began breathing more heavily during his visit, the family told FOX News.
But to their disappointment, the visit lasted only about 30 minutes.
"She wants her dad. She goes to her room crying because she wants her dad," Jayci's mom, Vonda Yaeger, told KETV before the prison warden agreed to permit Jason to see his daughter.
The girl's condition has been described as minute-to-minute, and she recently suffered a stroke.

How about the guy that wanted a sex change operation in Mass. I don’t recall his name but that case was in court for awhile, he was granted the operation (at all of our expense) and now he want’s it reversed. I really take offense to that kind of expense!
Ah, well.... For some reason I'm a bit pissy about stuff like that today.... ;-)
I see your point. I worked at a very large maximum security prison back in the 70’s. It’s usually the correctional officers who work overtime (time & 1/2 pay) that gets these type of assignments. The regular shift guys already have their assigned work details. This definately was expensive to the taxpayer. I think the family ought to pay something.
You can join me over here behind the flame-proof barrier. :)
Because he will presumably have the opportunity to see that child again which is clearly not the case here.
Getting born and dying are pretty significant events. In the USA we have paid for mucho many silly things.
I can’t think of a better thing to help out with than alowing a dying little kid to have those that brought her here, to be around when she leaves.
Her Dad may be a jerk, but this kid only sees him as Dad.
She loves the guy, and has no understanding of why others do not.
Thank you. LOL. It’s too bad good old daddy didn’t think about his daughter when he was breaking the law.
And therefore the child should pay for it, I presume?
I agree. Our system should balance both justice AND mercy.
You people are totally over-reacting.
I don’t think this CRIMINAL should get free things that NON-CRIMINALS don’t get. Let him work off the costs. Have him work while in prison. Take a small amount off his paychecks in the future until it’s paid off. Let HIM pay for his crime.
That way his daughter doesn’t suffer, but tax money is not used to reward a criminal.
He offered, if allowed to be with his daughter until she passed - which is imminent - that he would go back and serve double the time he has left on his sentence.
They could easily put a leg tracker - or whatever they're called - on him.
He's not a murderer, rapist, molester, or violent criminal.
Why punish the little girl? SHE is the one to be considered over all other considerations.
"Thou shalt not judge..."
What does serving more time (Which will cost even MORE money) have to do with criminals receiving free benefits that the law abiding don’t get?
Dealing it, cooking it, using it. We have to distinguish between various levels of this horrid meth shit now?
I disagree. This drug isn't like heroin that comes from a poppy field high atop a mountain prairie in Central Asia, transported via camels to Turkey, placed inside cans of caviar and shipped to Rotterdam, refined then transported to Baltimore, and sold to a third party who gets his homeboys to sell on street corners which eventually winds up in the arm of some dead young Hollywood actor.
With meth, the cooker, dealer, and user are all the same people. There isn't one degree of separation from any of them. They're the reason Sudafed is held inside a vault at the drugstore.
I have no tolerance for tweakers. If there was a button I could push to make all their heads explode at the same time, I'd jump on it with both feet. Maybe you'd agree with me if you'd ever found out your vacant rental property had been broken into and used as a meth lab and the pipes were ruined by them dumping chemicals down the drain when they were finished. That, or ever had a mullet-head tweaker on your block who didn't think anything of hammering on the exhaust pipes underneath his primer-coated Camaro at 3:00am on a weeknight because he'd been up three days straight and time didn't mean anything to him anymore. It's all about petty crime to get money for more crank.
Those people suck. People who make excuses for them suck even more.
I think it is a good thing that this child's father was allowed to visit her. However, if he can't be released on his on because of the severity of the crime, the costs of providing him a police escort should not be at the taxpayer's expense.
CHARITY IS NOT A ROLE OF THE GOVERNMENT!
I'm not saying that it isn't a worthy cause, I'm saying it's not the government's role to fulfill it at taxpayer's expense.
Perhaps the money could be raised through private contributions since this got so much public attention.
Jayci Yaeger has been allowed three escorted visits with her father, but each trip lasts only a couple of hours and costs the family hundreds of dollars. Requests for longer furloughs have been denied.
Who is over-reatcing?
Yeah, it isn’t like the father was a murderer or a child molester. Yet those criminals are returned onto the streets to repeat their crimes on society. But Heaven forbid if a dying child needs to see her father before her death. People who cannot show compassion to this family are poor excuses of human beings.
I think they are so pissed at the father's crimes (which are real) that they forget that the kid is the one who's suffering.
I agree with you in one aspect....however....the benefit here isn’t going to the criminal, it is only for the little girl. Best guess, this could be done cheaper than what is being done.
If the little girl wanted her Dad with her, it was her wish, look at it it as a favor for an innocent dying kid.
This child probably isn’t aware of the dastardly actions of her father. She is a child. Support dying, is probably as important as support for living.
We pay for illegals, the lazy etc. This is short term and important to this little girl.
After this, the Dad can go back to jail and maybe he could pay for his visits in the future.
Once again, IF this family paid for all associated costs, I have no problem with this.
If not, do we do this for every inmate in the country with a dying child? Dying spouse? Dying parent? When do the lawsuits demanding equal treatment start?
And why don’t the children of law abiding citizens get free transportation to visit THEIR dying children?
How do we pay for the things government is supposed to pay for if everyone gets everything free?
