Dad Allowed to Take Leave From Prison to See His Dying Little Girl

Thursday, March 27, 2008

OMAHA, Neb. — A 10-year-old Nebraska girl with terminal brain cancer had a simple last wish: to have her dad by her side as she lay on her death bed.

On Wednesday, seemingly against all odds, Jayci Yaeger's wish came true.

Her father, Jason Yaeger, who has been locked up in a South Dakota federal prison on methamphetamine charges, was allowed to see his daughter for what may be the last time.

He was furloughed after a barrage of letters and phone calls from around the country convinced officials to let him visit the hospital, according to KETV.com.

Jayci, who cannot speak, move or eat, could sense that her father was next to her and feel his touch, because she began breathing more heavily during his visit, the family told FOX News.

But to their disappointment, the visit lasted only about 30 minutes.

"She wants her dad. She goes to her room crying because she wants her dad," Jayci's mom, Vonda Yaeger, told KETV before the prison warden agreed to permit Jason to see his daughter.

The girl's condition has been described as minute-to-minute, and she recently suffered a stroke.

I agree that he should not be granted any clemency. However, he should be able to be there for the child. After his child dies, back to jail.

Fine. YOU pay for EVERY SINGLE INMATE in the country who has a dying child to go visit. This is an outrageous expectation for criminals to have.

It's not like the guy needs a battalion of armed guards following him. He's already scheduled for release to a halfway house in August. He's been a model prisoner. He clearly isn't too much of a threat to anyone's safety.

For cryin' out loud. A sheriff could give him ride in his squad car and escort him to the hospital. We're not talking about thousands of dollars here.

NO child should ever have to pay for a parent's crimes--but, guess what, THE DAD MADE THE DECISION FOR HIS DAUGHTER TO PAY FOR HIS CRIMES WHEN HE DECIDED TO COMMIT THEM!

Yeah, the red and caps? Did nothing to make you look any more sane.

I’m glad they did this and decided it before she is gone.

Her wish was for her dad to be with her and hold her her hands, when she died; which was denied her,. not just to visit her.

I guess that not agreeing with you made me insane.

How convenient for you.

Nope, I have no problem with people disagreeing with me, in fact I thrive on it. I do, however, have a bit of trouble with people whose replies are the typed equivalent of a Howard Dean speech.

Ok...so I'm not sane because I post differently than you prefer.

How nice for you.

Another might be of the opinion that dancing with shadows is indicative of insanity. That, would be comparably as valuable as your clamored-for “diagnosis.”

(for your time)

*Fabulous* post! You are right on! This is not just a sick child or even a dad behind bars. He’s not deemed dangerous otherwise he’d be under lock and key behind barbed wire fences. And this little girl is DYING and she wants to be held by her father! I don’t understand what is wrong with some people that they can’t see what this is about. This is not a guy trying to get out of doing time.

I am so heartbroken for this father and for his little girl. Just heartbroken. Heck, I don’t even know him or the circumstances which got him to where he is but I would gladly step forward and do a portion of his time if the great and powerful ozs in this saga would have some mercy. This is just a tragedy.

Are you talking about the guy in prison, or about the illegals who don’t want to be deported?

So are you saying that the child paid for the decision of the crimes, meaning, he beat the hell out of her, and she should pay for that? Do you even have children?

There is no one else that is more disgusted with criminals of all kinds whether they are murderers, rapists, terroists, child abusers, etc. Most of them I would give the death penalty. I am not much of a forgiving person in cases like this.

I have never seen such a vicious thread on FR in the 10 years I have been here. No one cares about him. We just care about a little girl who loves her daddy and probably has no idea or knowledge of what he has done. He is just her daddy.

You my dear, are a moron.

“Wishes” are not within the purview of the court. Hard cases make for bad laws. If we change how the legal system works every time there is a sad story that tugs our heart strings we will no longer have the rule of law, we will have the rule of emotion.

It’s very sad this child is a victim of her father’s criminal behavior, but I’m not sure rushing to make exceptions will fix it. Instead it will create a rash of “you have to make an exception for me too” demands.

The judge’s decision falls within the parameters of what constitutes ‘extraordinary circumstances’. If you can point me to anything more that fits that than this case, please do.

I have never seen such a vicious thread on FR in the 10 years I have been here.

And I've never seen so many liberal arguments on one thread as I have on this one.

Scan upthread, replace 'guy in prison' with illegal immigrant and 'little girl' with kid of illegal who just want to go to school here in the USA to see what I mean.

Impossible to tell some of the poster here from some of the posters on DU.

We all have our debts and obligations. The man has debts to society and to his family. He’s putting his obligations to his family ahead of his obligation to society. He only has the rest of her life to repay her the best he can, and the rest of his life to repay society. Who here would do it differently given the same choice?

Are you freaking kidding me? You're trying to equate a child dying with one who wants to go to school in the US?
