The Disgrace of Liberalism
American Thinker ^ | March 27, 2008 | J.R. Dunn

Posted on 03/27/2008 2:00:04 AM PDT by kingattax

2008 marks the end of liberalism as a governing force in the same way that 1968 marked the end of liberalism as a political doctrine.

American liberals spent the '60s seeing their programs and policies collapse one after the other. The War on Crime, the War on Poverty, civil rights legislation, Vietnam, all were either unmitigated disasters or textbook examples of the law of unintended consequences. The Democrats went into the 1968 presidential election as crippled as any political party in American history, choked with failure, bereft of ideas, and facing a general uprising from their own younger elements.

The Democrats' 1968 Chicago convention marked the end of classical liberalism. Media coverage revealed American liberals as incapable of controlling their own constituency, much less directing a country. As delegates cowered within the convention center, Movement rioters ran wild throughout the downtown area, fighting knock-down, drag-out battles with the police. Not a single liberal figure made any serious attempt to confront, control, or even communicate with the rioters. Little more than a decade after declaring itself the "American civic creed", liberalism was on the ropes.

Instead of joining the Whigs and Know-Nothings in historical oblivion, liberalism surrendered to its internal rebels, the Democratic Party's left wing, indistinguishable in beliefs and intent from any hardcore socialist party on the international scene. In 1972, they ran one of their own, George McGovern who in 1948 had served as delegate for communist front-man Henry Wallace) for the presidency.

the most disastrous episode of nepotism in the history of the United States

Don't know about that one. JFK/RFK was a boondoggle. RFK's pursuit of organized crime when he was the son of a bootlegger was especially rich in irony.

Quotes I love... the Democratic Party's left wing, indistinguishable in beliefs and intent from any hardcore socialist party on the international scene

liberalism in the classic sense existed only in the minds of the naive, the ill-informed, and terminally nostalgic.

truly mindboggling levels of corruption and ineptitude have been continually renormalized by fellow politicians and the media to enable her to survive.

his "Kennedyesque" speech on race, was in fact purely Clintonian in that it attempted to transform his failings into virtues while placing the blame on the country as a whole.

“Thats why they now call themselves Progressives”

Liberalism died a long time ago, but liberals won’t lie down. They continue to dream and scheme their great plans for changing the World. Our educational establishment and most of our news media are controlled by the Left. Liberals have succeeded in setting the agenda. It will be a long climb for conservatives. But worth the trip.

Same can of bull crap/communism.

Just a new label.

Peel off the Progressive label,
you’ll find one that says “liberal”.
Peel that off, you’ll find socialist,
peel that, you’ll find the can of communism.

I believe you already know what to DO about it.

Teach your kids objective truth.
Teach them the foundations of economics.
Teach them math, English, the ability to reason, and to use that reason to win debates.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I have already done that on an individual family basis. But,,,my family alone will not stop the slide of our country into the Marxist hell. One family alone is like shouting at a hurricane.

First, I don't believe that the generally conservatives really know the enemy: godless Marxism. Our talk show hosts could start educating their audiences as to the true nature of the enemy. They could start calling the enemy by it true name: Marxism. Conservative listeners could help nudge Rush, Sean, and OReilly in that direction.

Also,,,I think **many** liberal/Marxists and their Useful Idiots are disgusted with the government schools. Conservatives do have enough money to offer these children ( and their own) private scholarships that would get these kids OUT of the government schools. The goal should be the complete SHUT DOWN of every government school in the nation! In a few years, these kids would be moving into college and taking over key positions in society.

I honestly don't believe that we have much time left. The frog is nearly cooked to death. We must act NOW!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Any suggestions for changing that?

You have identified the problem. What should conservatives **DO**?

Please read post #16.

One family alone is like shouting at a hurricane.

Attend the next homeschool conference you can get to. It will give you strength of heart. You're NOT alone.

Don't know where you are located, but there's one here in KCMO one month from now.

Until we break the teachers unions there is no hope.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Until we SHUT DOWN government K-12 schooling there is no hope.

Until we thoroughly reform and/or shut down our Marxist dominated colleges and universities, there is no hope.

Please read post #16. I have a suggestion for doing that.

Homeschooling alone will never be enough.

We must shut down the government indoctrination camps. I have a suggestion for doing that in post #16.

We need some conservatives with back bone to stand up and be counted (either in government service, office....and in the general population).
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Ok...Let's say we had some conservatives with backbone. What should they **do**?

Weak as the Republicans may be, they do boast such figures as Schwarzenegger, Jindal, Crist, and Coburn among many others, not to mention a presidential candidate who, whatever his drawbacks, is a different order of being than the opposition.

I have no problem with Jindal and Coburn. But Schwarzenegger??? And what's up with Crist? He endorsed McRINO before the Florida primary?

You're right. Easy money and always the need for more relief. It's insatiable what the citizens of the welfare state demand from the government. Britain should be a paradise by now from over 50 years of socialism, but it is just the opposite. Hopefully the US doesn't go down that path.

"Real conservatives" don't have the overwhelming desire to run other people's lives that draws liberals to the beltway bureaucracy like flies to a rotting corpse.
