McCain dropping by Utah with Romney in tow
Salt Lake Trib ^ | 3/26/08 | Tom Burr

Posted on 03/26/2008 4:38:58 PM PDT by pissant

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain will make an invitation-only fundraising stop in Salt Lake City at the Grand America Hotel on Thursday.

Former presidential contender Mitt Romney will accompany McCain to the $1,000-a-person event at the Grand America Hotel, a McCain campaign official confirmed today on the condition of anonymity.

Romney, who dropped out of the race after poor showings in the primaries, received nearly 90 percent of the Utah GOP vote on Feb. 5, while McCain had just 5 percent. Romney is a member of the LDS Church, like more than 60 percent of the state's residents.

While McCain raised about $183,000 from Utah since January 2007, Romney raised millions.

Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., who has been the subject of media speculation as a possible running running mate, will be in attendance, organizers said.

McCain also is holding fundraising events in Colorado and Nevada this week.

Wow, first Charlie Crist, now Mitt Romney. At least that’s what it looks like.

Why not. Might as well have the 3 headed beast we tried so hard to avoid. Get it over with already.

The tactics of VP are always difficult. Policy is generally never a consideration.

McCain needs to attack blue Electoral Votes. He’ll need a Republican who might bring some to the party. That’s offense. That’s aggressive fighting. Picking a red state Republican is playing passive defense.

Romney might grab Michigan. Pawlenty might grab Minnesota.

The Democrats are facing an situation where a good chunk of Hillary people would support McCain over Obama. And a solid chunk of Obama people would support McCain over Hillary. They will almost have to select each other as VP, and that guarantees they will not support the other’s policies.

It is most definitely a year to play offense and try to grab some blue EVs.

As many here know, I was a vocal supporter of Mitt Romney. However, I don’t think McCain should appoint him as his VP. I think he should wait until the Democratic catfight is over. If Obama wins, he should select a woman as his running mate in order to scoop all the women who wanted Clinton just because of her gender. If Clinton wins, he should select a black VP for those wanting to vote for Obama just because of his race.

Ideally, he should select someone like Condoleezza Rice. It’s unfortunate she seemed to have deluded herself vis-a-vis the Palestinians; but that won’t matter to McCain.

So, to Senator McCain, please select Dr Rice as your VP.

McCain must be considering Romney for Ambassador to the Republican Party.

Rice as VP ? You are aware of her AWFUL record as Secretary of State, aren’t you ?

SC Governor Mark Sanford, one of the best Governors in the nation, is the only acceptable choice. McCain puts a sleazy or incompetent RINO liberal on the ticket, and we Conservatives won’t vote for him, period. He can get angry Hillary supporters to vote him in, because we’re not going to rubber stamp this insanity anymore.

ahhh = where to start?

Republicans aren't the party that hires, elects, appoints because of race or gender, but qualifications.

and Condi isn't interested in more politics

I sure do. She has fallen for the idiotic myth of Palestinian grievances. Still, I’m not saying she’s the best candidate for the job, only the smartest candidate from a political standpoint.

I’ve given up on this election cycle. I think McCain is the LEAST damaging to the security of the United States and its citizens. If Obama, the anti-American, anti-military, black supremacist becomes president; he’ll severely, possibly fatally, cripple the security and economy of the US. If Clinton becomes president, corruption, bribery, and scandal will once again rule over the White House.

I prefer Hillary over Barack, only because I think the harm she’s going to do will be recoverable within a generation. As for the latter candidate, I think the recovery will take much longer, if at all.

Having Obama’s idealized and naive view of the world will cause enormous repercussions, and incredible “buyer’s remorse.”

Those are two totally different people there. Romney would bring a lot to the ticket not the least of which would be increased play in Michigan, New Hampshire, Nevada, Massachusetts, and yes even Utah (though we don’t need it there). He brings executive experience, relative youth, good debate skills, an intact warchest and top-notch fundraising team, private sector experience, and even good looks (which doesn’t hurt). Not bad.

A vice president plays a very minor role in nearly every administration. With McCain it would be no different. Therefore it’s silly to not vote for him over a VP pick.

Listen up everyone.

fieldmarshaldj has spoken!

I have thought of a few that might be a good bet for VP, when considering that McCain has hinted at only one term - and the next VP will likely be our next CIC.

While I can see why Sanford might make a good choice, indeed, "the only acceptable choice' seems a bit strong. Who, besides the poster, gets to make this decision. Do we get to have even an opinion, like in maybe discussing other possible candidates and why?

For example, John Thune wouldn't be all that bad a choice.
