More trouble for presidential hopeful: Inquiry by conservative US media outlets reveals that Obama advisor Merrill 'Tony' McPeak is a longtime anti-Israel critic who slammed American Jews for acting against US interests

Yitzhak Benhorin Published: 03.26.08, 01:24 / Israel News

WASHINGTON - General Merrill "Tony" McPeak, Senator Barack Obama's military advisor and co-chair of his presidential campaign is a longtime anti-Israeli critic who has slammed Israel harshly during his career, according to an inquiry by conservative American media outlets.

McPeak, who served as the chief of staff o the US Air Force before retiring in 1994, made headlines over the past week after accusing former President Bill Clinton of McCarthyism. Yet as it turns out, over the years he has criticized Israel for failing to withdraw to the 1967 borders and charged American Jews were preventing American pressure that would lead to a Mideast peace agreement.

The examination of McPeak's career, undertaken by conservative magazine American Spectator among others, revealed that the general adopted a harsh anti-Israeli line in interviews he submitted to and articles he published. According to the magazine, beyond his affinity for alcohol, which saw him detained for drunk driving a year ago, McPeak also appears to take great pleasure in slamming Israel and pro-Israel Jews.

'Large vote in favor of Israel'

In an interview with The Oregonion about five years ago, McPeak argued that the influence exerted by American Jews is responsible for the lack of progress in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. According to the general the problem was New York and Miami.

"We have a large vote here in favor of Israel. And no politician wants to run against it," he said.

In the same interview, McPeak spoke of his personal experience with Israel.

"I've spent a lot of time in Israel, worked at one time very closely with the Israeli Air Force as a junior officer," he said, "but that's maybe the more cosmopolitan, liberal version of the Israeli population."

McPeak also charged that Jews and Christian Zionists manipulated American foreign policy in Iraq.

"Let's say that one of your abiding concerns is the security of Israel as opposed to a purely American self-interest, then it would make sense to build a dozen or so bases in Iraq," he said.

'Disturbing canard'

Following the latest revelations, the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) called on Obama to remove McPeak as his military advisor and national campaign co-chairman.

"By choosing to have a military advisor and national campaign co-chairman like General McPeak, serious questions and doubts are once again being raised about Senator Obama's positions and judgment on Middle East issues," said RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks.

"Rather than putting the blame where it belongs - on the Palestinian leadership and their continued reliance on terror, General McPeak finds it more convenient to blame American Jewry and their perceived influence," said Brooks. "This is the same dangerous and disturbing canard being promoted by the likes of Jimmy Carter and authors Mearsheimer and Walt in their book, The Israel Lobby."

"Senator Obama continues to surround himself with advisors holding troubling and disturbing anti-Israel bias," Brooks said. "We call on Senator Obama to immediately remove General McPeak from his campaign leadership role and as a key advisor."

Sorry—the liar is the one who says the Jews are at fault for the situation over there.....they have the one and only Democracy in the Middle east..I was so outraged I was not communicating very well.

I was pretty sure that was what you meant but I was just checking, you know how us FReepers are:). I agree with you BTW.

General McPeak's Service to his Country while on Active Duty is to be applauded. His Activism since he retired has exposed him for the flaming Liberal he always was politically. His speech of late is exposing him for the old woman he has become...

In the case of Israel, I don't think it is adverse to giving land back to the parties concerned subsequent to the Seven Day War.  The problem is, Israel has never received guarantees that it will be treated as a normal neighbor subsequent to the return of the land.  Syria doesn't act as if it is going to remain peaceful.  It's on record as having armed Hezballah.  It isn't interested in peace.  Israel did sign a treaty with Egypt and return the Sanai to it.  That has worked out well, and would be a good model if other states would follow Egypt's lead.  They haven't.

Any person who acts as if the return of land is hindering the peace process should take a long hard look at the Gaza strip.  Did Israel's surrender of Palestinian autonomy provide even the slightest glimmer of hope as it relates to peace?  No.

You've got to be an anti-Semite in good standing to blast Israel as the road-block to peace in any way shape or form.  It has done more in the furthence of peace than any other concern.  It has funneled funds into the Palestinian territories.  It has armed the Palestinian police.  It has trained the Palestinian police.  It has allowed thousands of missiles to rain down on it's soil, without taking the drastic measures it would take to put a stop to it that just about any other nation would have.

It is unfortunte that some people in our nation are blinded to this.  It is extremely unfortunate that some racial groups have alligned themselves with some of the most despicable people on earth, terrorists and their advocates, but that is undeniably the case.

Any person who has a view of Israel along these lines, is essentially unfit to take a leadership role in our military IMO.  It signals a shared world view, or close to it, with some of the worst people on the planet, racists, terrorists and even genocidal maniacs.

You wouldn't believe how anit-semitic the Left really is. However, most Jews are so used to voting Democrat, that they seem to have blinders on. When I point things like this out to my Jewish neighbors, they turn a deaf ear to it.

Hillary has a Jewish problem too. You gotta love the Dems. They are anti-semitic, yet Jews provide a tremendous amount of financial support for them.

Without a doubt.

I was talking with some relatives at Easter brunch on Sunday, and one of the liberals was going on and on about the pernicious influence of the religious right.

I pointed out Obama’s Pastor Disaster, and how much the right is to be preferred over the religious left.

To which even the libs had to agree.

I spoke with a good friend of mine in Ohio, who happens to be Jewish and a Democrat. He voted for Hillary in the primary because his synagog told him to vote for Hillary.

Now, despite the racist comments of Obama, his church, and his campaign, the same synagog is telling the members to vote for Obama.

I just can't figure this one out.

I have no questions or doubts. He’s on the side of the Islamofascists. His church even has Moslem members, which is why Barack Hussein-Voldemort Obama joined.

Do what I do. Go to the Synagogue and tape the sermon calling for specific voting. Then play it for the Rabbi telling him that you will be sending a copy to the FEC. Remind him of his wholly penumbra of "Seperation of Chuch and State".

Tends to shut the leftists up. Of course, it is also a great way of getting kicked out of a congregation.

Just when the Wright story was getting old, and the Hillary “sniper story” was getting attention, an Obama advisor can’t keep his foot out of his mouth.

Make another copy for the IRS. They tend to frown on 501(c)(3) non-profit religious organizations promoting specific candidates.

Can someone please educate me as to why the Jewish community as a whole typically vote Democratic, regardless of a candidates’ platform?

Every year I see the same thing and every year I scratch my head in amazement!

Obama has extremist and radical leftwing pals.

This could be the story du jour for now until election day.
