FBI: Tattered parachute found in north Clark County may have been D.B. Cooper's (WA)
The Columbian ^ | March 25, 2008 | Tom Vogt

FBI agents in Seattle are examining a tattered parachute found recently in north Clark County, looking for evidence that it might have been used by legendary skyjacker D.B. Cooper.

The 'chute was found by children living near the center of the jump zone where the skyjacker bailed out of the 727 jetliner with $200,000 in cash in 1971, never to be heard from again.

Larry Carr, a special agent in the FBI's Seattle office, said the property owner was putting in a road on the site and his tractor blade uncovered some cloth. The children pulled out the canopy until the parachute's shroud lines appeared.

The owner of the property contacted the FBI, and Carr picked up the parachute earlier this month.

Now, after examining the parachute for about three weeks, the FBI could use more help, Carr said.

"We need to go back to the public. We need someone with knowledge of jumping equipment," Carr said by telephone from Seattle. Investigators hope to learn whether the parachute Cooper was given in 1971 matches the canopy in their possession.

People with information are asked to contact the FBI's Seattle office at fbise@leo.gov.

my Examiner asked his troops if we knew of “DB”.
WE knew nothing.

Likely story. ;)

Wouldn't the resources be better spent on tracking down one of the estimated 40-60 serial killers on the prowl any given year?

So true.

The liberal media has influenced law enforcement to the point where they heavily focus on the busts that draw media attention (bring on the cameras) and everything else can just wait.

There's a budget to be justified.

No. The last time D.B. Cooper was seen outside of the airplane, he was driving around not wearing a seatbelt and smoking a cigarette.

The cost to society is just too great.

"Wasn't Cooper a financial guy"

I don't know that they ever identified the guy. I recall that there were a load of suspects and a couple of FBI guys were sure it was some fella that was caught for a 2nd highjacking but my personal take is that at night, at 10k feel jumping over a forest at 200 mph trying to carry a boatload of cash he probably didn't make it. It was a very diffcult jump in daylight.

Of course they'll never know for sure if this is the chute he used, odds are that it isn't but I can't think of a way that they'll be able to prove it one way or another.

Several bills were found a few years back. One guy got water samples off the bills and has been running up and down each creek and tributary in the area taking samples in search of the sample with a matching “fingerprint.” Seems like a lot of work for $200k.

“Maybe a hydrologist can use the latest technology to trace the $5,800 in ransom money found in 1980 to where Cooper landed upstream. Or maybe someone just remembers that odd uncle.”

Well, that right there, you couldn't make that up. Like Ron White said, "You can't fix stupid."

this is a fascinating story but hardly the worst of the worse....the police should keep their eyes open but an active investigation at this late date seems wasteful....

I wish .... 1/100 of 1% of anyone understood what was happening in the '50's and '60's.

Hell, my first car was a '49 Chrysler .. handed down to me by my brother.

If I had known that cars would do what they're doing now ... and I was independently wealthy, I'd have bought and warehoused 3 of every make and model .. just a short 40 years later ..............

Siigghhhhhh.

The bills were not marked. They were photographed. The serial numbers were circulated and eventually published. But cross-checking $20 bills against a comprehensive list would have been remarkably tedious and essentially pointless... there was no reward for finding any of the bills and a found bill wouldn’t have yielded much information in the end...

The hijacker registered for the flight under the name “Dan Cooper.” A reporter’s mistake resulted in him becoming known as D.B. Cooper. A real Dan Cooper was investigated and cleared.
