Sex Offender Ordered by Judge to Post Signs Tuesday, March 25, 2008

HUDSON, Kan. — Under a judge's order, a man who has admitted molesting a boy has posted signs around his house and a decal on his car proclaiming that he is a sex offender.

The hand-painted signs reading "A Sex Offender Lives Here" are posted on all four sides of Leroy Schad's white house in this central Kansas town of only about 150 people. His vehicle has a large decal with bold yellow lettering reading "Sex Offender In This Car."

Schad, 72, was originally charged with four counts of taking indecent liberties with a 9-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy in 2005. He was allowed to plead guilty in March 2007 to a lesser charge of aggravated indecent solicitation of a child, and the original charges were dismissed.

District Judge Ron Svaty sentenced him to five years of probation and house arrest, and ordered him to post the signs during his punishment.

Schad is appealing the sign requirement. He could have faced about three years behind bars.

"I know that I deserve something for that, but I don't think I deserve what I got," he said.

The signs went up a few months ago. Schad said the loneliness and isolation imposed by the house arrest are the toughest to deal with.

"It's been pure hell," said Schad, who has lived in the town since 1971.

As part of his probation, LeRoy Schad, 72, must have signs on his Hudson, Kan., home. He also has to put a sign on his car when he goes to counseling.

"I know that I deserve something for that, but I don't think I deserve what I got," he said.

He's absolutely right.

He deserves a bath in sulfuric acid, not this sign nonsense.

He should be posting signs outside a jail cell, not a house.

I hate when judges get cute with their punishments. If he’s such a danger to the community that he needs a warning label everywhere he goes, the man belongs in jail. He committed sexual offenses against two children... that’s not worthy of jail time? Idiotic.

I agree.

He should be in jail. A sign isn’t going to stop the mollesting.

The guy is 72. Maybe he has huge medical bills that the judge doesn’t want the state to pay.

Personally, I prefer this. There are only 150 people in the community.
In jail, basically he is an old man who people ignore. (gone are the days that child molestors got a horrible punishment from the other inmates, so I’ve heard)
In the communtiy, it’s as good as a public flogging.

IMHO LeRoy Schad ought to be in jail. It would safer for the children & safer for him if he was in jail. If you do the crime then do the time. I don’t see where signs are going to do much but stir angry people up. And you can’t blame people for being angry.

Who knows, maybe the citizenry will take care of him one night. It might be what the judge hopes will happen.

In the communtiy, it’s as good as a public flogging.

He can take a bus to the mall in the next community over and find another little boy to molest, and another young life to trash. Then the state can pay for that kid's medical bills, too.

These punishments make a mockery of justice and a mockery of the victims. But at least the judge got his name in the papers with his irreverent, zany sentence.

Well that could easily happen in prison too. Its wrong of the judge to let people take care of this pervert when he could have easily taken him off the streets. That is the judge’s job. I wondered if it was because of his age that he wasn’t sent to jail...I just pray he leaves children alone now. I think jail is where he belongs no matter what his age or health is.

He should have been executed.

Lose your balls, lose the signs. Fair trade-off.

Here’s a thought: how about a sign around his neck when they hang him?

This is ridiculous. If he’s a danger to the community he should be locked up, and if he isn’t then the state has no business making him a target for vigilantes.

That’s wrong! It only hurts the innocent neighbors whose property value now will plummet and they’ll never be able to sell their home to get away from the pervert.

If you've ever lived in a small town, and from your comments I'm guessing you haven't, this is a jail sentence, maybe even worse.

If every sex offender was to suffer like I'm sure this guy is, no sex offender would ever need to be sent to prison. The towns folk will keep him in line, or perhaps even kill him if he tries anything.

By golly, you're right! You must not be as dumb as you look. The average house/condo value in Hudson is now $32,598(no kidding, that's what it is), down from an all time high of $32,600. House values have taken a beating and no one can sell! There goes the neighborhood.
