WASHINGTON -- A crackdown on guns is meeting some resistance in the District.
Police are asking residents to submit to voluntary searches in exchange for amnesty under the District's gun ban. They passed out fliers requesting cooperation on Monday.
The program will begin in a couple of weeks in the Washington Highlands neighborhood of southeast Washington and will later expand to other neighborhoods. Officers will go door to door asking residents for permission to search their homes.
Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said the "safe homes initiative" is aimed at residents who want to cooperate with police. She gave the example of parents or grandparents who know or suspect their children have guns in the home.
Community leaders went door to door in Ward 8 Monday to advise residents not to invite police into their homes to search for weapons.
"Bad idea," said D.C. School Board member William Lockridge. "I think the people should not open your doors under any circumstances, don't even crack your door, unless someone has a warrant for your arrest."
Ron Hampton, of the Black Police Officers Association, said he doesn't expect many in the community to comply.
"This is one of those communities where the police even have problems getting information about crimes that are going on in the community, so to suggest, now, that the police have enough community capital in their hand that the community is going to cooperate with them, I'm not so sure that's a good idea," Hampton said.
If weapons are recovered, they will be tested and destroyed if they are not found to be linked to any other crimes.
A police spokeswoman said that if evidence of other crimes is found during voluntary searches, amnesty will be granted for that crime as well.
"Chief Lanier has been clear," Traci Hughes said. "Amnesty means amnesty."
Until her second sentence when she says the guns will be crime traced and if they were involved in a crime they will prosecute.
The amnesty Lanier speaks about only applies to legally purchased guns that they confiscate in these sweeps.
FReegards...
Oh, you're such an extremist. Not.
Seriously, people like these - and those who go along with them - are America's domestic enemies. They are unfit to live in a free society.
There are plenty of people even on this forum who think my ideas are extreme. I sincerely thank you for not being one of them.
I know spelling flames are lame, but I can't stop chuckling. Sorry.
What you’ve posted is a model of moral and historical clarity. History has many terrible things to teach us concerning people like Lanier. The lessons of history are also equally clear as to how to deal with them.
He's like a werewolf or something. You have to keep killing him over and over, and sometimes he's in many physical places at the same time.
Sort of like saying,
“if you do not give up your right to remain silent, then we can beat you until you confess.
Of course, looking at the face of modern liberalism, as personified in her photo, you might be totally correct.
Personally, I think that these people are not sane as I define it, i.e, liberalism is a mental disorder characterized by infantile behavior, childlike value systems, and a total lack of the understanding of personal responsibility for one's own actions.
“no way should they let the police in with a “warrantless” search”
It’s one of the reasons we had that little dust-up with the Brits.
“Never surrender your firearms without a fight!”
What’s that old saying? “SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS!”.
“A look! A 4 star General, with ribbons, and everything!”
Amazing isn’t it? I love it when I see the Nat. Assoc. of Police Chiefs standing behind some gun-grabbing, limp-willy, hand-wringing politician. There’s enough brass there to keep me in re-loading supplies for years.
I guess you could just think of shooting burglars and tyrants as sporting and you’d be just fine!
With those you should invite as many in as you can fit. Then detonate!
Yikes! Now that you mention it, the similar appearance and mental capacity are striking.
Picture this. Cops knock on the door, ask and receive permission to search. They find a WANTED poster of the resident for Murder 1 while escaping from prison. He carjacked and robbed somebody while he was out. Currently he is dealing drugs but they only find traces in his house. Are they going to grant amnesty or not to this fine resident of DC who cooperated with the PD?
My guess would be no, but with the rules applied so unevenly I'd not want to wager a whole lot on it.
Wishful thinking.
There are plenty of people even on this forum who think my ideas are extreme. I sincerely thank you for not being one of them.
On this topic and the topic of government, I’m right with you as well.
