CHULA VISTA, California Fresh off his eighth Iraq visit, Sen. John McCain declared that we are succeeding and said he would not change course.
To underscore his view of the stakes in Iraq, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee twice referenced a recent audio tape from Usama bin Laden in which the Al Qaeda leader urged followers to join the Al Qaeda fight in Iraq and called the country the greatest opportunity and the biggest task.
For the first time, I have seen Usama bin Laden and General (David) Petraeus in agreement, and, that is, a central battleground in the battle against Al Qaeda is in Iraq today. And thats what bin Laden was saying and thats what General Petraeus is saying and thats what Im saying, my friends, McCain said. Petraeus is the top U.S. commander in Iraq.
And my Democrat opponents who want to pull out of Iraq refuse to understand whats being said and whats happening and that is the central battleground is Iraq in this struggle against radical Islamic extremism, he added.
McCain also said Democratic rivals Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton were naive and dead wrong to want to withdraw troops.
Were succeeding. I dont care what anybody says. Ive seen the facts on the ground, the Arizona senator insisted a day after a roadside bomb in Baghdad killed four U.S. soldiers and rockets pounded the U.S.-protected Green Zone there, and a wave of attacks left at least 61 Iraqis dead nationwide.

Yep. That’s the reason I’ll hold my nose and vote for McCain. If we weren’t at war I sure as hell wouldn’t, though.
Have to respect his resolve...
We won’t know whether we’re succeeding in Iraq until US power is largely withdrawn. Then we’ll see whether the Iraqi government and security can, or even wish to keep order as one reasonably united nation.
McCain also said we might be there for 100 years. Whether he was serious or not, he might have been closer to the truth, then. Who knows how long it’ll be before all the various factions will choose to work together, and also effectively continue the fight against the jihadis, who will probably keep coming into Iraq for other Muslim nations for years to come.
Probably we will be seeing victory in Iraq this summer.
Well, there you go. We’re winning in the war on terror then. Because we all know that only Iraq is full of radical Muslims and terrorists and once we win in Iraq, we will have won the war on terror. What we’ll do about the radicalization of Europe........doesn’t matter. What we’ll do about Iran building nukes......doesn’t matter. Syria, Lebanon, Saudi.....only Iraq matters in the our national security strategy.
All the Muslims moving to the U.S. and using our legal system to use against us......hey, we’re winning in Iraq. And if we’re attacked again by those getting through our still open borders, just remember that we’re winning in Iraq. That will make everything okay. Just keeping telling yourselves that we’re winning in Iraq when people in our country are jumping to their deaths from skyscrapers again. It will make you feel better anyways. And a Republican adm can take the blame for it.
And George Soros puts his feet up, and just sits back, waiting.
You’re correct. I posted here any number of times that the WTC was not located in Baghdad, and that the greatest threats to US security are in the US, not in Iraq or anywhere overseas, even though those areas do have secondary importance.
But McCain is reckless and dangerous to our national security with his obsession over Iraq and the surge, and his amnesty/open borders pro-active negligence at home.
Maybe his immigration policies should be called pre-emptive negligence, or pro-active negligence.
I think he, like many, suffer from Myopia. This definition of myopia:
2. lack of foresight or discernment; obtuseness.
Just how badly does one need to be suffering from it to not be able to see that there are terrorist networks all over the world with the means and intent of coming here to cause harm. That while our military is doing a great job overseas, they cannot be expected to hunt down, find, and kill every last terrorists before they can get here. That is we expect to remain safe from another 9/11 and we continue to not defend our own borders, that this is exactly what we are expecting them to do and this is irrational. Those focused so strongly on Iraq for all these years are quite myopic. Meanwhile, threats grow in other countries, including right here under our noses. Iraq is not a threat to us anymore and has not been since Sadam was hung. What the hell? Have people lost their minds?
he’s right
That's why we haven't been attacked in over 6 years now.
I just heard today, in another case of government patting itself on the back, that fully 100 terrorist plots aimed at the US have been foiled, I suppose since 9/11. So, the terrorists must be trying to do something within the US. But I think Al Qaeda and such go for the spectacular hit which takes a few years to plan and carry out.
It stretches all credulity to pretend that we can do anything at all about all the places where more terrorists can be incubated and later sent toward the US: Saudi Arabia, Iran, Egypt, Sudan, Syria, and yes, Iraq, and many other Muslim nations, not to mention Great Britain, France, Germany and most all European nations with significant Muslim populations. Plus, our own US based Muslim immigrants and citizens.
No, our most important national security these days in right here in the USA, and immigration policies at the border, at the employer’s and throughout the US is critical to the safety of US citizens. The overseas stuff is very much secondary. Not enforcing our immigration laws is reckless and dangerous. Amnesty and open borders is insane, and will eventually cost us dearly, as it did on 9/11.
This is an old article, saying 100 attacks were foiled by sometime in 2002. I heard the same thing today.

They to be plotting and scheming for more attacks within the US.
Most intelligence insiders disagree with this logic.
It is true that AQ stuck it creditability on victory in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, they were absolutely planning on numerous, successful follow up attacks on US soil. The thought was that they could collapse the US economy and start a world wide Islamic revolution.
The fact that they have failed has created a serious problem for them, leading to a chain reaction of lower support worldwide.
They really fail to see, or grasp in the slightest that US attacks unite the American populous. They keep thinking about Spain, and decades of US retreat in the face of aggression; ie., Beirut, Somalia, etc.
If they were really concentrating their efforts on attacking us here, we would have been hit regardless of our counterterrorism measures. Just walk down the street sometime and look at all the potential targets, there are thousands of them, and you don’t need to be a genius to derail a train, bomb a ferry or do a Timothy McVeigh. We’re a free society and that means we’ll always be somewhat vulnerable. Heck, look at Israel. They take security VERY seriously and they still can’t stop all the attacks.
And one article the lamestream ABCNNBCBS won’t be reporting.
wish we had someone like him here in the UK, instead of a bunch of former student activists from the 1970s.
