McCain faces risky topics in California trip
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 3/24/8 | Carla Marinucci

A growing chorus of Republicans says that the rough waters currently being navigated by Sen. Barack Obama may now make him an easier candidate to sink than Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is not struggling with issues like race and religion.

But those same Republicans may want to consider the dangerous straits ahead for their own presumptive nominee, Arizona Sen. John McCain, whose gaffe last week in Iraq - where he appeared to confuse Sunni and Shiite factions - raised eyebrows.

In the wake of controversies over Obama's support from the divisive Rev. Jeremiah Wright, McCain may be pressed again to explain his past praise for the Rev. John Hagee, a wealthy and controversial televangelist with a penchant for outlandish statements. Hagee, who has suggested that Hurricane Katrina was retribution from God for sins including homosexuality, told the New York Times Sunday magazine that McCain specifically sought his endorsement.

McCain comes to California today to begin a campaign and fundraising swing in what has been promised to be a 50-state presidential campaign that will include blue California, which voted for the Democratic presidential candidate in both 2000 and 2004.

The senator from Arizona, just back from Iraq, will conduct a town hall meeting near San Diego with families, many of them military, on the subject of the war - a theme and a place that could be problematic as he aims to appeal to independent voters in the nation's most populous state. He'll make the appearance just miles from where President Bush strode onto an aircraft carrier in a flight suit in May 2003 and delivered a now-infamous address announcing that "major combat operations" in Iraq were over - while a "Mission Accomplished" banner waved behind him.

Hagee isn’t McCain’s problem in CA. Amnesty for tens of millions of illegal aliens is.

EXACTLY. Hagee wasn’t McCain’s pastor for over 20 years, McCain didn’t give him $20,000 last year, and he didn’t marry McCain and Cindy and baptize McCain’s children.

However, McCain DID author a bill giving illegal aliens amnesty, and Californians are dead set against amnesty for illegals - they’ve drained our resources, closed our emergency rooms, and suppressed wages and education - all of which is documented.

But McCain calls us RACIST for opposing amnesty. As did Dianne Frankenfeinstin, who is going to have a tough time come her next election when the California Republicans splash that in every commercial.

Also, McCain deserted POW/MIAs. He voted against barring terrorists from the US. He is creepy and lacks the manners, health, moral character, and energy to take on the role of POTUS.

What a load. A) It wasn't a "gaffe". B) Shiite Iran has been funding Sunni al Qaeda groups in Iraq, plus the Sunni Hamas in so-called Palestine. Maybe the SF Chronicle-Pravda doesn't know this, but everybody else does.

What he needs to do is stop confusing Illegal Aliens with US Citizens.

>>Hagee isn’t McCain’s problem in CA.<<

But Juan Hernandez might be, if the MSM chose to focus on him. Did Jeremiah Wright ever encourage people to commit felonies? Hernandez thinks it’s OK for illegals to steal US citizens’ SS numbers.

>>Amnesty for tens of millions of illegal aliens is.<<

California has such a budget disaster that Schwartzenegger is proposing to cut money to schools. But the mindless Cal. voters will blame Schwartzenegger instead of the illegals.

McCain needs to stop in this nonsensical quest.

But he won't. And anyone who thinks he might needs to have their head examined.

That “choice” is between a baseball bat to the kneecap or to both arms.

I’ll have neither, thanks.

Not if I can help it.

Has Congressman Hunter endorsed McCain?

Well, he endorsed Huckabee when he exited. I’m just curious if he followed Huckabee into the McCain camp. I haven’t seen anything about that.

He thinks illegal aliens are the same as U.S. citizens so really he is not confused.

Exactly right. McCain will find that amnesty is his biggest problem among Reps. He is asked about it at every town meeting.

I don’t think so, and I don’t think McCain will pick Hunter for VP.
