Wherever John McCain goes these days, it seems, Joe Lieberman is there.
When McCain needed a quick reminder in Jordan last week on how to characterize Islamic radicals in Iraq receiving aid from Iran, Lieberman was there to whisper into his colleagues ear. A day later in Israel, the Connecticut senator proved equally helpful, stepping in to help McCain clarify the meaning of the Jewish holiday of Purim.
Whether wearing yarmulkes together amid the throngs at Jerusalems Wailing Wall, meeting reporters outside 10 Downing Street in London or sporting matching suit-and-sweater combos at a snowy New Hampshire town hall meeting, the two have been nearly inseparable since Lieberman endorsed McCain last December.
As McCain hopes to wage a campaign that appeals to an independent-minded electorate exasperated by the Bush administration and the political status quo, Lieberman, a former Democratic vice presidential nominee, has become something of a symbolic character witness meant to testify to the Arizonans bipartisan approach.
As recently as 2000, the McCain-Lieberman political partnership might have seemed unthinkable. At the time, McCain was running for the Republican presidential nomination. And Lieberman was one of the nations most prominent Democratic politicians, a well-respected centrist whose selection as Democratic presidential nominee Al Gores running mate drew widespread praise.

Liberman will be a foil to Dingy Harry. Liberman and Grahm will provide control of the Senate and will eliminate Reid’s power if the rats still have the majority.
Liberman Grahm duo will be more powerful as senators than as Veep. I suspect we will see one or both on TV daily denouncing the evil partizen Reid as they advance the agenda.
I don’t want Joe as VP, but it’s a little weird to dump on McCain for “cozying up” to a guy who is supporting him, who represents, like it or not, a lot of Americans whose vote it would be nice to have for you, not against you. Unless you think that the way to get elected President is to tell people that THEY are not permitted to support YOU unless you agree with them on everything??
“.....Lieberman was one of the nations most prominent Democratic politicians, a well-respected centrist.....”
A centrist!
The guy is moderately hawkish, and usually just on Middle East issues.
Lieberman rates close to 100% agreement on every other issue with Clinton and Obama.
Maybe this Lieberman-McCain alliance is why McCain has to go to London to raise money for the GOP?
If you look, you’ll see the real danger of a McCain presidency right here in this thread in the words of those who are always willing to push principle a little further aside for a win.
Bingo.
Our list of principles seems to support for the Iraq war at this momment. Nevermind that MIAs didn’t get McCain’s support. At least he’ll push the war.
I support the war, but not at the expense of turning John McCain loose on this nation.
He will never get my vote.
It is very important that he choose's a V.P. that conservatives can trust to cast tie-breaking votes in the senate if it comes to that. Also, McCain is not in the best of health...you never know.
Lieberman is going to be McCains Vice-President?
NO....he is more effective in the senate....juan mccain should choose JC Watts ~ who could take the blush (so to speak) off of b. HUSSEIN!!!!
No worries, Joe is nothing more than a showpiece for the Dem's and Idies.
McCain will pick someone younger and a little more to the right as his VP
Notice I said a little.
Yeah, you’re probably right. OTOH, he’s pretty old...
I know, but it IS a little unsettling. Not that I wouldn’t take Lieberman over any other Dem, I just wish... well, I wish a lot of things, but McCain’s still our nominee.
It makes sense when you think about it.
McCain knows he is not going to get the conservatives onboard no matter what he promises (as if we would believe his promises) so he has to lock up the center completely — including the normally Democrat leading centrists.
The Democrat race has devolved into a leftist slugfest between two Marxist surrender freaks. Withdrawing from Iraq and being soft on national security is not going to give the Dems the center left.
Lieberman has a lot of cred these days, plus he's Jewish (which is a minority, sort-of). Maverick McCain and Lieberman together would excite a lot of people.
I will actually feel good about not voting for that ticket.
To add to the nausea for conservatives, McCain will probably make Joe his VP candidate.
Geesh, the BS never ends. One thing is for sure, the GOP as we have known it, has merged with the Dems.
Yikes, we need a new party.
Strategically it could be brilliant. With the Dems in charge of Congress, the GOP hierarchy is probably looking at this election as a “must-win” if we don’t want everything we’ve accomplished in the past eight years undone. If McCain thinks the election will be too close for comfort, he may have to pick Joe to lock up the center. The irony is that such a choice would actually free McCain up to run a little more to the right since he would have Joe holding down the center. Totally castrates the Commies, IMHO (and if you can guess what movie that line came from, you get a cookie).
