Abedin was a famous Islamic scholar but died when Huma was 17, and now both the Islamic institute and its journal are headed by her mother Saleha Mahmood Abedin also known as Saleha S Mahmood a famous Islamic scholar and deputy dean of an Islamic school in Saudi Arabia called Dar Al-Hekma College for Women . http://www.amritavarsham.org/profiles/saleha.htm. According to the New York Observer Huma Abedin was born in Kalamazoo Michigan but her parents took her at the age of 2 to Saudi Arabia where Huma Abedin lived in Jeddah Saudi Arabia until her return to the US for college education. From the New York Observer article on April 1 2007:

oh, we have been watching Huma for a while. I did google search on her and have posted on her background and ties to Muslims. So she is one to watch.
What I object to and find repulsive is the constant posts on lesbianism, etc, with absolutely no basis in fact and posts that I find vile and slanderous.
We have enough real material to have concern about her and it dilutes the seriousness of the concern to have fabrications, fantasies, falsehoods and such posts. They reveal more about the poster than the problem.
She is a muslim, she has ties in the international muslim community as does her brother and mother. She bears watching. Not vile rumor mongering.
