DENVER --
The long and winding fight for the Democratic presidential nomination is giving a fundraising migraine to the Mile High City.
As the host city, Denver must raise $40.6 million by June 16 for the party's Aug. 25-28 convention. This week, the host committee missed its second fundraising deadline, and Mayor John W. Hickenlooper said he believed the drawn-out battle between Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois had distracted potential donors.
"I think there's still so much focus around who the candidate will be that it is hard for people" to focus on the convention, he said.
If the Democrats already had a nominee, "everybody would be focusing on 'How can we make it a great convention?' " he said.
Denver's host committee fell $5 million short of its goal to raise $28 million by March 17. Committee officials declined to comment, but said in a written statement that they had commitments for $28 million.
"Our strategy," committee spokesman Chris Lopez said in a statement, "is to raise as much money in the months leading up the convention as we can. That's the fiscally prudent thing to do, and we're making our donors aware that we need their financial support now. Our team is working aggressively to meet all of our goals."

Pending doom was never so sweet,,
The DNC could feel it, even before they could meet,
Between a bigot and a pathological lier,
The convention, would soon be a ball of fire!
***
Our whole town will be a burnin' ball of fire
Buildings burnt down, down while the streets run wild,
As Denver burns, burns, burns...Ball of fire!
A by product of “Operation Chaos”.
They can’t wage successful campaigns and they can’t put on a convention...but they state they can run an entire country. Yea...right.
The witch lead, but her polls expired,
The noob senator, he earned her ire,
Now Hussein's polls are half a point higher,
So the witch said, "Put the party to fire!"

Later in the article:
“In St. Paul, Minn., the Republican host committee — which must raise $39 million — met its Dec. 15 goal of collecting 60% and expects to meet its June 15 deadline of 80%, spokeswoman Teresa McFarland said.”
Basically...they have 100 days to get around $20 million. I’ll make a guess that they get somewhere around $12 million and the city has to call the governor to advance them the remaining funds in hopes of making the city look good for tourism. The $40 million? I’m guessing its a low-ball number and the city has serious issues by November with its budget.
It’s the post-convention that they’ll need money for.......
This state is already facing fiscal difficulty. If Ritter gives money to Denver to help with Hickenlooper’s Folly, I bet folks are going to be steamed.
From a 3/17 article in the Denver Business Journal:
“Colorado received more bad news about the future of the local economy — this time the five-year forecast of state tax revenues by the Colorado Legislative Council.
The forecast shows that total expected revenue for the state decreased by 1.3 percent since the December forecast.
That means the state expects to collect $486.7 million less for the general fund and $207.1 million less for the cash fund between fiscal year 2007 and 2012 than it forecast late last year.
The revenue decrease eliminates the money available for many highway and construction projects, according to the forecast.”

Folks are going to be really mad if tax dollars go to help pay for the riot-fest when we can’t even get our terrible roads fixed.
They’re just not asking the right people. Second Chance Body Armor, for one, the folks that make fire retardants, the ones who make those little plastic thingies they’re always using instead of handcuffs. Gas stations near the convention center are going to have to sell the stuff per bottle instead of per gallon. Innovate, people, innovate!
I would take more pleasure in this Democrat food fight if we had a credible candidate on the Republican side. But I suppose we’d might as well enjoy it while we can.
Democrats like to spend everyones money except their own.
Question: How much tear gas can you buy for $28 million.
Answer: About enough for the first half of a Democrat convention.
Slogan: "If you drink enough of it, makes getting thrown under the bus fun."
The revenue decrease eliminates the money available for many highway and construction projects, according to the forecast.
But they will fully fund welfare for the lazy.
Hickenlooper has proposed a $20 million plan to build apartments for 200 homeless people (most of whom would rather be in the park with their buddies).
In Seattle we have neglected our roads for at least 5 years to pay for a 14 mile light rail system that costs $56,800 per foot, is two years behind shcedule, and has total cost projected at double original estimates.
And the City Fathers want us to vote of approval of doubling the system before the first train leaves the station!
We ought to start billing this as Empty Suit vs Pant Suit. Let's get ready to Rummmmmmmmmble.
Empty Suit vs. Pant Load
