LaBeouf Pleads Not Guilty To Unlawful Smoking

Attorney Enters Plea On Behalf Of Actor After Warrant Issued

LOS ANGELES -- Shia LaBeouf has pleaded not guilty to an unlawful smoking charge in Los Angeles.

Attorney Michael Norris entered the plea for LaBeouf on Wednesday, a day after a judge issued a $1,000 warrant for the actor's arrest.

The "Transformers" star, who was cited last month, was scheduled to be arraigned on the misdemeanor charge but he failed to appear at Tuesday's hearing.

The bench warrant was dismissed.

A hearing is set for April 24.

If convicted, the 21-year-old actor faces a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine and six months in jail.

I can't comprehend why anyone would vote for laws such as this -- just can't comprehend it.

Six months in jail for smoking (presumably) tobacco?

It is indeed nuts.

That's because you don't think like a 'progressive' fascist.

Bizarre. I thought the whole point of these laws was to generate revenue in fines under the guise of public health.

Jail time?

Health issues? Rush and I have been saying this for years — kill a baby in the womb (you have that choice), but don’t dare light a tobacco product.

The "Celebrity Roundup" in the People section of the Miami Herald had the following today, which supplies a bit more info:
Shia LaBeouf: new Hollywood bad boy?

A $1,000 bench warrant was issued Tuesday for the Transformers star after he failed to appear in court on a charge of lighting up in a no-cig zone. The dirty deed took place outside a gift shop in Burbank, Calif., last month.

It was later recalled when his attorney showed.

This isn't the 21-year-old's first brush with the law. He was arrested late last year for failing to leave a Chicago Walgreens. What's next? Egg throwing?

http://www.miamiherald.com/358/story/463261.html

Let me get this straight: he was cited for smoking a cigarette outside???
