CHRIS Cox for VP?
The Orange County Register ^ | March 17, 2008 | Robert Novak

Posted on 03/19/2008 9:37:25 AM PDT by Clintonfatigued

Former conservative colleagues in the House of Representatives are boosting Christopher Cox, chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission since 2005, to be Sen. John McCain's vice presidential running mate.

A White House aide under President Reagan, Cox served 16 years as a congressman from Newport Beach and was chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee. He was named as a federal appeals court judge to begin President George W. Bush's administration, but withdrew after Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer of California announced her opposition.

Former Rep. Rob Portman of Ohio, who also was a member of the House leadership before joining the Bush Cabinet, is being promoted for vice president by Washington insiders. But Cox's backers in the House argue that Portman lacks Cox's stature in the conservative movement, which they say McCain needs.

If you don’t realize that John McCain would put his own brand of RINO “surrenderist morons” into power in our foreign policy and national security apparatus, you really haven’t paid much attention to your candidate’s history.

Really, you should be darning your socks...you have to take your shoes off at your new assigned house of worship.

Don’t worry...after President Obama removes that pesky terrorist surveillance program, it will all be over quickly. Oh, and he’s promised to treat all us white folks OK, too.

In other words, if we don’t support your Benedict Arnold, the British will be garrisoned in all our houses.

You do know that your candidate has a close personal relationship with Obama and Clinton, right?

You better watch what you say about them. He’ll be throwing you under the “Straight Talk Express” too.

Hey, already your candidate is giving you more goodies to defend!

Come on over and explain to us how great his plans for Kyoto II “cap and trade” schemes are going to be for our once-sovereign nation:

Suuurrrre it does. But hey, look on the bright side: Maybe the imam they assign you will be in favor of tax cuts.

My clear conscience will help me get through it.

On the other hand, those that vote for McCain will be endorsing his liberalism. Hope you like feeling responsible for a global warming tax and new version of amnesty.

He was mentioned as a VP choice for Bush back in 2000 (Bush-Cox). There must be something to the praise.

My guess is that previous intercourse has been with Republicans. Now the house belongs to conservatives. Probably an uncomfortable dilemma for a partisan.

At this point the best that this conservative can recommend is that you either throw the angry little man under the bus of dissolve your party.

The California Republican Party let a foreign liberal in the back door and now the party is over, literally. Keep up the blind loyalty and the same is destined for the Central Committee near you.

If one thinks that if Chris Cox is selected as John McCain’s running mate that it will suddenly make a traditionally blue state like California competitive, then they have clearly missed out on a two word drama that polarized Orange County and the rest of Southern California for 10 plus years - El Toro! As a congressman, Chris Cox singlehandedly did more to negate aviation reuse at El Toro than any other human being on the planet!

Of course Cox will have the gratitude of a mere 13 of 34 (South) Orange County cities that voted to scuttle El Toro Airport in 2002, even though their “Great Park” today is nothing more than a grounded balloon and lots of pretty brochures. But outside 949 area code, Cox will find far less support and even a lot of resentment. For example, residents near outlying airports such as LAX, John Wayne, Burbank, and Long Beach are not exactly enamored to be burdened with expansion in order to offset the loss of El Toro.

Even within his hometown of Newport Beach, Cox cannot be incredibly popular for abandoning his very powerful congressional post (at number 5 in the nation no less) within a mere 20 days after Lennar assumed title to El Toro in 2005. Especially, when the long term future of John Wayne is unresolved.

Then there are thousands of pilots around California and elsewhere who cannot possibly take great joy in seeing El Toro set the record for being the largest military airfield ever to completely go to waste. We are talking 39,000 feet worth of runways! No other defunct facility in the nation is even close!

Even when it comes to non-aviation uses of El Toro Chris Cox has not exactly scored many brownie points. In 2003 some veterans approached him to use his immense congressional power to set aside the commissary and some sorely needed military housing for reuse.

Instead Cox who has never served, sided with developers who had far more lucrative ideas for the base. As a result, Camp Pendleton Marines continue to languish on a long waiting list for housing, and veterans must make further drives at $4 a gallon for shopping privileges that they earned.

Just imagine if word got out about Cox and El Toro to a military community like Pensacola, which just so happens to be located in the critical swing state of Florida. As one can see, Cox’s presence on the ballot, with will not only make McCain’s long odds in California even longer, it would also put some other states (with large military populations) into play for his Democrat opponent. Cox is an anchor that a former Navy officer like McCain should not set sail with, lest he sink his candidacy for President. Therefore, it would behoove John McCain to find another running mate without so much baggage.

When The Big One hits, those runways are going to be sorely missed. The ground there isn’t subject to liquifaction. Gonna be hell to pay, from what I’ve been told.

Come on over and explain to us how great his plans for Kyoto II “cap and trade” schemes are going to be for our once-sovereign nation:

Aw, that's so cute how you try to turn "McCain's by far the best on national security" into "I love McCain, he's the next George Washington and I smilingly agree with everything he does."

Kinda disingeenuous of you. What was that you were saying about a clear conscience? Ah well, I won't badger you about morals, your imam will take care of that.

How is it guys like you keep talking about principle all the time, but one of your "principles" is to dishonestly lump every national security voter in with liberals?

But hey, I won't badger you about morals...your imam will do that for you.

Naw. I’m realistic about your attitude towards Senator McCain. Like most of his supporters, you’re tepid at best. Doesn’t bode well, does it? That’s kinda the point, ya know...

“I’d prefer to support the one who is sane, able on foreign policy, committed to destroying our terrorist enemies”

That certainly isn’t John McCain.

From time to time, conservative ideologues cross paths with partisans. While the partisans never quite understand the goals of the ideologue, the ideologues clearly understands the futility of voting for a liberal under color of party.

Advancing conservatism at the grass roots level. A goal which precludes partisan loyalty for a host of obvious reasons. In this discussion, an angry, little, liberal, Republican candidate is a shining example of the best of intentions gone terribly wrong.

It's your party. Get rid of the liberal. The GOP can't prevail missing an additional 15% of the electorate.

I am interested in advancing conservatism at the grass roots level. I'm not interested in losing a war to Islamists while doing it. Disposing with the nominee will guarantee a Hillary or Obama win, not because McCain's great shakes, but because a fractured party will not win even with a conservative in the lead. As for your 15%, I highly doubt that many conservatives are going to folllow you off the cliff.

Peddle your absolutist crap to someone else. Politics is about choices, and I've made the choice that keeps the incompetents from running the war.

I'm sure many Republicans were tepid about FDR. And because you're OK with having Hillary/Obama in the White House, you haven't realized that most of the conservative electorate is anything but tepid about keeping them out.

As for McKyoto, do you think you're giving me news? I know McCain sucks on a number of issues, which is why I opposed him in the primary. But now that he's the nominee, and because he will prosecute the war, I stand with him.

I am about 6'4" and weigh somewhere around 240. If I were in the infantry and was wounded and could choose my medic, I would choose someone who could through me over their shoulder and hike my butt out of the line of fire. But you know what? If there's not a guy that big I'll let the guy who's 5'4" and weighs in at 130 treat my wounds, especially if the alternative is two have a couple of Al Qaida doctors work on me.
