Some bloggers are jumping all over Senator John McCain for his supposed "gaffe" today. According to The Trail, a blog over at the Washington Post, McCain said that Iranian operatives were "taking al-Qaeda into Iran, training them and sending them back." He elaborated by saying it was "common knowledge and has been reported in the media that al-Qaeda is going back into Iran and receiving training and are coming back into Iraq from Iran, that's well known. And it's unfortunate." Senator John Lieberman apparently then whispered something in McCains ear, prompting McCain to take it back: "I'm sorry, the Iranians are training extremists, not al-Qaeda."
So now a bunch of bloggers, and even some of the networks, are pouncing on McCain. They point to the fact that Iran is Shiite and al Qaeda is Sunni, so they could not possibly cooperate. Because Senator McCain doesnt know this "fact," he is supposedly ignorant of what is going on in Iraq and in general.
But McCain was right the first time. He shouldnt have taken his statement back. And its the bloggers who are ignorant--not John McCain.

Damn that Lieberman.
The funny thing was when McCain corrected himself by saying “I meant extremists, not Al-Qaeda.” Al-Qaeda doesn’t qualify as extremists?
If the man could just take a breath and check things out. But he seems in a hurry to apologize for something, anything at every opportunity. I hope he can get that under control.
“.......Senator John Lieberman apparently then whispered something.......”
So who is Senator John Lieberman?
“McCain said that Iranian operatives were “taking al-Qaeda into Iran, training them and sending them back.”
...prompting McCain to take it back: “I’m sorry, the Iranians are training extremists, not al-Qaeda.”
What’s the difference between those two sentences?
McCain’s VP pick?
Joe Lieberman, not John.
I thought Lieberman was more informed than this. I’m kind of surprised he didn’t know better.
“If the man could just take a breath and check things out. But he seems in a hurry to apologize for something, anything at every opportunity.”
Except where he’s screwed conservatives. There, he won’t apologize. He was just bein’ a maverick, donchaknow?
Big *sigh* my friend.
Talk about a catch-22: Either he’s a dolt who’s ignorant of the dynamics of the Iranian/Al-Qaida interactions; or he’s a nitwit who changes his mind and reverses course at the moment of a breathed whisper into his ear.
There are lots of men like that. ;-)
