Lawyer withdraws from corruption case after Mike Carona says he can no longer pay him.

Former Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona has lost his longtime criminal defense attorney because he can't afford to pay him.

H. Dean Steward filed a notice with the federal court today to withdraw from the corruption case.

"I am not leaving the defense team because of the facts of the case or Mike personally," Steward said in a statement. "Mike and I remain good friends. I also remain convinced that after a jury hears all the facts, Mike will be acquitted."

Carona, his wife and his mistress are charged with mail fraud, witness-tampering and conspiring to use the sheriff's office to make money for themselves.

The moral of the story is, if you’re going to be corrupt, steal enough that you can afford your legal defense.

Lawyers get off easy. Their idea of professionalism stops with the buck. I can not imagine a physician stopping care cause someones money ran out. As a matter of fact legally we can not. It is called abandonment.

I’m looking forward to Carona, his wife and his girlfriend going to jail. Hopefully, he’ll rat out others.

Another corrupt government employee gets caught playing emperor.

Now he knows how all the people he has arrested feel. They are broke monetarily, stressed where they can’t do their job, and terrorized by the system. This sheriff, and many others, are on a power trip and don’t have discernment about who they arrest for what.
