Political strategists today were quick to parse how Democratic Sen. Barack Obama's sweeping speech about race and the American experience may affect his campaign to become the nation's first black presidential nominee.
But among African-American scholars and leaders, the post-speech talk wasn't of polls and focus groups but of witnessing history. Obama's words—about slavery, black anger, white resentment, and the imperative to move forward—harked back, they said, to those of Martin Luther King Jr. and Abraham Lincoln, and they deserve a similar place in history.
"This was his kairos moment," said the Rev. Alton Pollard, dean of Howard University's School of Divinity, using the ancient Greek word that characterizes moments that can alter destiny. It was, he said, Obama's particular "moment in time," and one that required him to lead.
"Race was never an issue that was going to disappear," Pollard said. "It's too much a part of our national fabric to think that we can gloss over it and move on without having to contend mightily with each other."

And he bluntly talked about how a black man of Wright's generation could hold on to feelings of betrayal and discrimination, as well as how resentments could build in the white community...
The difference, of course, is that I don't think of myself as part of some "white community," I think of myself as a non-hyphenated American.
That's the divide that has to be bridged.

I didn't get to hear it, but if it helps Obama regain Moe Mentum for the Dem nomination...putting the Clintons in my rear-view mirror...giving the American people a clear, black-and-white choice for the '08 elections & the possibility of a Presidential campaign that addresses real issues rather than the semen Bill squandered in the Oval Office lavatory...
...then I'll take your word for it...
What gets me is the fact that most of the media are missing a key element of this speech.
First, Obama said he was not aware of the fiery things that Wright said.....................Today he said he was aware of them.
Secondly, Obama said he was not in the church on days that Wright had spoken in such a way................Today he said that he was present during of Wright’s tirades.
This is a big hole in Obama’s creditablity as far as I am concerned. I wish the media would realize it.

At this point any further exploration of the “Wright” issue is going to be seen as piling on, due to the very influences he highlighted across the racial divide.
The Clinton campaign can’t touch this anymore for fear of the inevitable backlash. Another bullet missed it’s mark.

What was he before that?
I thought he told us somewhere that he had ALWAYS been a Christian...
