It was extremely unlikely that Hillary Clinton was going to overcome Barack Obama's lead in delegates, states and total votes and take the Democratic nomination, but Obama's speech this morning -- graceful, thoughtful, nuanced, sweeping, challenging, unprecedented -- pretty much wiped out any chance at all. It was a speech Hillary could never have given -- really, few U.S. politicians ever could have given.
I write this not just because I think this will dampen the Rev. Wright controversy. I write this because Obama did an extraordinary job of presenting himself as the candidate of "the better angels of our nature," to use the phrase from Abraham Lincoln's first inaugural address. His speech isn't just inspirational to millions of voters who are tired of cynicism and division. I think many in the political media will see it as redemptive on personal grounds. Maybe they really aren't spending their careers in swampland.
Which not-so-coincidentally is the name of Time magazine's fine national politics blog.
Obama hasn’t won and won’t win a big state. Hillary will take the fight to the convention floor and win.
It’s not even slightly over. Mr. Obama probably wowed the true believers, who are already hypnotized to respond to “hope” “change” and “ordinary people can do extraordinary things.” Motivational speakers have been making millions on that pap for decades. Look for a smarmy Chicken Soup for the Black Soul in a bookstore near you within months.
This is an election for the leader of the United States. Pretty speeches won’t get the job done and the majority of Americans are smart enough to understand that.
Let Mr. Obama go on making nice racial speeches (with a decidedly black slant) somewhere else. He may do some good.

I couldn’t have written a better response to Reed at the SD Trib. In fact, I DID write it. LOL.
I understand he made a comparison of Wright’s hate-talk to the conservative talk show hosts. That’s just trading on the fact that too many people never listen to Rush or Shawn (sp) or Michael - they just take the drive-by media’s word for it.
Obama is turning out to be just like Hitlery: he will do or say anything for power.
I agree ... no way can he win. I’m glad we’re running against Obama rather than the Beast. The hate-pastor thing is not going to go away.
I don’t care if we hear it every hour on the hour. People need to know that Obama does not repudiate his pastor.
” His history proves he’s faking”
He’s always been Phony O’Baloney to me.
He’s an empty suit, the Stepford candidate or black man, a cipher.
I think he and all his followers are either blind and stupid or outright racists, commies, socialists or whatever you want to call them.
Most of all, he’s just plain creepy. A total phony.
it wasn’t even an amazing speech. pretty boring delivery and I wonder if the MSM will play the entire speech on primetime. They’ll say he did the job -just get over it and move on- but they won’t want people to decide for themselves
And he never did, did he?
The San Diego Union Trib strikes again. Hunter gave some great speeches too, but they wouldn’t tell ya that.
Excellent work! I did indeed forward your links to friends all over the country, including a couple in PA.
There was never any question that liberals and elitists were going to swoon over whatever tripe Obama emitted.
But I don't think he helped himself at all with middle America today. The Jesse-Jackson-izing of Obama proceeds apace.
I don’t get it.
Last week, Obama said he was never in Church while the vile stuff was being said.
Today he says he might have been there, but also gives a great speech, and this somehow obviates the fact that he lied????
The chair of the DNC is Nancy respect the will of the people/pledged delegates Pelosi.
Her chances of winning the nomination are at best 20% imo.
As I understand the rules (probably imperfectly), if nobody wins on the first ballot, then the delegates are free to vote for whomever. I can see it happening that the first ballot fails to select a nominee, and then the politicing begins, which the Clintons are masters of. Maybe we'll see 1968 all over again, riots included.
George Soros is asian?
Apart from the fact that it was hypocritical, race-baiting, socialist swill, I kinda liked it myself.
In the case of liberals, missed votes are a very good thing. John Kerry is always missing opportunities to vote. And that is the best thing I can say about him. I appreciate very much how much time and effort he puts into not being there because if he were, he would certainly be voting against my/our interests.
From a friend in Long Island: "Hillary is dying, literally dying, with the way this is turning out."
It was exactly the time of lofty meaningless rhetoric that appeals to "political media" types, but falls completely flat on the average American who works for a living. They are not as enamored of intellectual navel gazing fluff.
He did well enough to cut off Hillary's hope of a revival, but he did not bury the issue with the general electorate, or evil talk radio.
