PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama in a speech Tuesday addressed the controversy surrounding his former minister, using it as an opportunity to challenge Americans to take a closer look at race relations.
Speaking to supporters at Philadelphia's National Constitution Center, the Democratic presidential candidate said he rejected racially charged comments made by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, but he tried to explain the root of those remarks.
Wright formerly preached at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, where the senator from Illinois worships.
Some of Wright's old sermons came under fire after an ABC News report last week, becoming a YouTube phenomenon.
In one, Wright said America had brought the September 11 attacks upon itself. In another, he said Sen. Hillary Clinton had an advantage over Obama because she is white.
Obama on Tuesday said his belief that all people want to move in the same direction comes from his "unyielding faith in the decency and generosity of the American people. But it also comes from my own American story."
The senator said that race only became a divisive issue in the campaign during recent weeks.
Obama admitted he had sat in church and heard his former minister make controversial remarks.
"Did I strongly disagree with many of his political views? Absolutely -- just as I'm sure many of you have heard remarks from your pastors, priests or rabbis with which you strongly disagreed."

Americans urge obama to abandon his campaign since he and his wife have been outed as a racist black separatists.
It bothered me that Obama made little reference to blacks responsibility to clean up black culture to help future generations.
He did, however, list government programs to help.
I believe the next step in erasing the past for decendants of slaves is to take responsibility for their culture and what their children see and do.

New FEC Complaint Details Gov Rendell Complicity in FEC Reporting Frauds By The DNC and Hillarys Senate Campaign
If a priest or minister ever uttered such vicious conspiracy laced hatred in my church, I’d get up and leave, and never return.
Barry Obama, or whatever the hell his name is, is dead wrong.
Sorry, Obama, I'm too busy whipping up a batch of AIDS v2.0 to give to blacks. < /sarcasm, which the MAN uses to keep Obama down>
DSS needs to pick up their children... exposing those little darlings to Jeremiah Wright's hate filled speeches is abuse.
First he denies that he was sitting in the pew when these type comments were made. Then he is caught quoting from the very same sermons in his book. Now he admits he did sit in the pew and listen to these hate-speeches.
Obama is now exposed as just another lying politician who will say anything at all to get elected.
His “pastor” can only make a buck by making his congregation feel like victims of “whitey” and that they have no power except his big mouth.

The short-term question is: will this speech help him with nervous super-delegates? My guess is the answer is “yes”.
You know what? Had it not been for slavery, the blacks in this country would be living among squalor, starvation and a rampant AIDS epidemic in about every country in Africa. They should be greatful that their distant ancestors went through, so that they can have the life they have now. Bizarre aint it?
We’ve all known about his church and pastor for months, and the MSM is finally catching up...? How well will this story play for Hillary, I wonder. Will we be facing Hillary v. McCain now, with nothing to bring out on Hillary that is not already known?
I hope so. Let’s start with his racist grandmother and
Jesse Jackson, who said the same thing about black men in the
street.
I’m still waiting to hear how 40+ years of preferential treatment of blacks by whites makes blacks mad.
Where in the world are blacks more free than in the US?
You rule, Mrs. D! :)
“First he denies that he was sitting in the pew when these type comments were made....”
And now he says he was there....Which way is it Obama?
He called the notion of self-help a CONSERVATIVE notion.....he addressed issues and said things that I have NEVER seen any other politician discuss or touch. He diagnosed the current state of race-relations perfectly.
His solutions however ever remain Marxist in nature.
His shot and Reagan was below the belt and uncalled for. He pretty much said that his ENTIRE coalition was based on reverse discrimination.
Kind of ridiculous - unless you count taking down of the USSR as discrimination.
