LIVE THREAD - Under Pressure, Obama Prepares for Race and Unity Speech
Fox News ^ | 18 March 2008

Posted on 03/18/2008 6:12:13 AM PDT by SE Mom

Barack Obama is preparing to deliver a major address Tuesday on race, politics and unifying the country after being hounded by questions about his relationship to a pastor whose sermons have been laced with anti-American invective.

In a speech whose religious significance could compare to one given in December by former GOP presidential hopeful and Mormon Mitt Romney, Obama may be forced to explain the philosophy of the 8,000-strong Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, where the Democratic presidential candidate has been a congregant for 20 years.

In announcing the morning address, to be delivered in Philadelphia, Obama would not say specifically what he will discuss, but suggested he wants to cool down the atmosphere after incendiary remarks by his pastor, retired Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., blanketed the airwaves over the past week.

I disagree with many who say he's toast as the speech surely will touch a chord in many, especially the young voters. Some parts moved me, others I found insulting but overall it was heartfelt and well delivered.

I agree... he was particularly clever in connecting his experiences with the poor black and poor white communities (as was discussed by Brit Hume after the speech). ie, bridging the Rev. Wright's racist remarks with those of his white grandmother's in the past.

I think his core supporters will still flock to him, but that some whites will have second thoughts, as he really did not disassociate himself from the Rev. Wright. If the election were today, I think McCain would pick up a lot of independent votes. We'll see where this all stands in November...

I am not voting for him but I am saying I understand his position. I think he disavowed Wright’s racism but he said Wright was much more, in terms of actions, than those words showed.

You may be right, this may not fly for him but it made sense for me.

His real danger is his marxism and his sympathy for muslims and his naive view of the world.

Amazing...Obama claims his Grandmother was a racist but Rev. Wright is not?

IIRC, Grandma made at least some of her comments in the context of actual crimes that had been committed by black men in the neighborhood. It's simply a fact that black males commit significantly more crimes than males of other ethnic groups, so Obama has no basis to dismiss her fear as an unfair stereotype.

Moreover, what he didn't own up to is his admission in his book that he, too, sometimes feels threatened by black males in his neighborhood.

Questions:

1)What happened to the question/Answer period afterward?

2)Seemed like the media billed it as more of a press conference with just reporters present. So, Who were the people in the audience invited to this? Obviously his supporters were there clapping after the first 10mins, as it turned into more of a campaign speech for the last 20 mins.

Yes Obama’s real danger is his Marxism.

But imo, Obama = David Duke.

Juan Williams just said this speech wasn’t enough because Obama didn’t take responsibility for sitting in that church for 20 years...and then firmly disavow Wright’s comments.

In his recent speech, Obama mentions that “to the untrained ear”, a congregation such as his may indeed seem foreign, offensive or
confusing to people unfamiliar with the “process”. I think it shows his typical liberalism by suggesting that it’s something we may not be fully capable of understanding. To suggest that regular folks don’t quite get it.

Well, we get it. I understand. It’s not lost on us! What’s happening in Detroit with Kwame Kilpatrick, etc...We get it...His tirade at the close of his possibly final State of the City address...Al Sharpton, almost any day of the week, it’s all part of what the American people should want to see less of. Never did I hear Barack Obama suggest that the African-American community in America could try a little harder and maybe work on their game a little more seriously.

Well, I’ve turned on the radio awaiting to hear what Rush has to say. He comes on in a few minutes here in Texas. I expect he will say Obama is right, it is all the fault of Talk Radio, the racist White Folks and them evil Conservative Republicans!

Today, Obama “came of age” as a full-fledged ‘if his lips are moving he’s lying’ Politician ... he demonstrated for one and all that he can shuck and jive with the best of the best .... The First Black President Bill Clinton and the ‘no ways tarrrred’ Mistress Hillary.

I believe Obama believes everything Wright believes

So do I! This speech today was nothing more than an attempt to whitewash (pardon me!) the hate speech of Jeremiah Wright and his congregants who danced in the aisles when he said "God Damn America."

His weak allusion to Gerry Ferraro fell flat on its face. He accused her of being an angry white woman. No, sorry, Osama! She is a feisty person who is blunt and forthright in her speech, but does not preach blatant ANGER and HATRED!

But LOOK! Obama Osama had a white grandma who raised him!!! First time he ever mentioned her in his speeches this year. Of course, he had to throw in the negative that his grandma was as leery of black men on the street as was Penny Pingleton's mom in "Hairspray". A stupid stereotype from the sixties!

Obama Hussein never distanced himself from the hateful Wright. He needs the money from Wright and his ilk!

Obama is a roaring hypocrite. His candidacy can't come to an end soon enough to suit me!

Rush opening his show with: Obama (formerly the “post-racial” candidate) is now - with his speech today - making this campaign about RACE.

CNN: Obama: Constitution stained by ‘sin of slavery’

Yeah, that phrase stuck out to me, too. It's true in a sense, of course, but it's not something that should be said by someone battling the impression that he is unpatriotic.
