(The Politico) "The hot-button issue of immigration doesnt appear to be going away anytime soon at least not in Republican circles.
On NPRs Morning Edition today, John McCain suggested that strong anti-immigrant rhetoric contributed to two recent, high-profile GOP Congressional losses of former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum, who badly lost to Sen. Bob Casey in 2006, and Jim Oberweis, who lost the heavily Republican seat of former House Speaker Dennis Hastert this month in a special election.

No, Oberweis lost because the GOP in Illinois is in shambles, thanks to the indicted, convicted and incarcerated Governor George Ryan.
McCain is saying their anti-illegals stands are what caused them to lose.
McCain is so out of touch, if that is what he thinks.
Apparently, he is suffering from selective memory. He seems to have forgotten the massive outpouring AGAINST his McCain-Kennedy Comprehensive Immigration Reform (aka amnesty for illegals), twice in 2007 as the Senate voted it down and once in 2006 as the House shelved it.
I agree!
Build the fence, Senator. Robert Frost was right - ‘Good fences make good neighbors’.
Welcome to McCain’s Third World-—he clearly intends to degrade our fragile democracy to a new low.
McCainaic is wrong, wrong, wrong on immigration——anti-illegal is a rare consensus issue the unites all segments of the political spectrum.
Amnesty failed twice even with a president backing it-—Hillary stumbled badly on the illegal licensing issue-—more and more states have enacted laws to control illegals, etc, etc, etc.
McQueeg has categorically said he will not “pander” to conservatives to get this important voting bloc on his side.
Course to this hyphenate suckup it’s not considered “pandering” when he panders to dual loyalty hyphenates (/sarc).
Not only does McQueeg not get it, he refuses to get it...
“I wont vote for him. Hes a worthless sack.”
I’m in Illinois. McCain has zero chance of carrying Illinois. Obambi, even with all his baggage, will carry Illinois in a landslide. So, It’s makes no difference at all who I vote for for president. I will concentrate on the other races.
See tagline.
Send a donation to McCain for President, and McCain will send you a clothes pin to use as you cast your vote for him.
“In northern states they do not see the problems with illegals like we do in the border states such as Texas.”
What are you smoking? Have you ever been to Northern Illinois? There is a HUGE population of illegals here, mostly from Mexico. There are entire towns up here that are close to 100% Mexican, where the Mexican flag is prominently displayed on buildings, houses, cars, etc., and if one hears English spoken it’s from some poor motorist who took a wrong turn and is screaming at the top of his lungs asking how to get the hell out of there! But he’s wasting his time, because no one knows what he’s saying, but they’ll mug him and kick his ass, just the same.
What’s sad is the Dems blowups are making this so easy that almost any Pub could win. I think even Bob Dole and his weak campaigning could win. But McCain seems like he’s trying to throw away a gift the Dems are trying to hand him by constantly coming after his own.
“He believes there should be no border at all between Mexico and the USA, ever.”
Yes, I’m beginning to think that way too.
Namely, maybe it’s time we just invade Mexico and make it the 51st state!
They have lots of oil and other goodies... and we could “liberate” all the poor and oppressed Mexicans from the corrupt Mexican elite.
... It would eliminate the evil border... but somehow I don’t think the above solution is what McAmnesty and Hernandez had in mind — in their plans to destroy American Sovereignty.
“I’m not arguing with you, only pointing out that we’re seeing it too.”
Hey, I’m the guy who wrote about illegals in Northern Illinois. I was just responding to the guy from Texas.
I doubt it was as simple as that. Too many people favor getting tough on illegal immigration. The real reason is something far more insidious.
"Very strong anti-immigrant rhetoric", John?
You putz you still don't get it. Conservatives are not anti-immigrant - WE ARE ANTI THE ALIENS WHO CAME TO THIS COUNTRY ILLEGALLY IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!!
It just doesn't sink in does it John? Another, "my way or the highway for all you confused conservatives".
Thanks, I have chosen "the highway"!!!!!
>>Santorum and Oberweis lost because of the general anti-Republican mood of voters. Illegal immigration had nothing to do with it.<<
For the moment, assume that they lost because they were for against open borders (e. g. the Chamber of Commerce, the GOP elites, etc., supported their opponents). So if some congresscritters lose their seats because of an anti-war movement in their districts, then according to McCain, the GOP should abandon Iraq, Afghanistan, etc? Principles don’t matter now?
Sorry, friendly fire accident.
The man just does not know when to shut up.
