Barack Obama will give a major speech on "the larger issue of race in this campaign," he told reporters in Monaca, PA just now.
He was pressed there, as he has been at recent appearances, on statements by his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright.
"I am going to be talking about not just Reverend Wright, but the larger issue of race in this campaign," he said.
He added that he would "talk about how some of these issues are perceived from within the black church issue for example," he said.
He also briefly defended Wright from the image that has come through in a handful of repeatedly televised clips from recent Wright sermons.
"The caricature thats being painted of him is not accurate," he said.
The speech could offer Obama an opportunity to move past the controversy over his pastor, and to turn the conversation to a topic he'd rather focus on: his Christian faith. But the speech also guarantees that the Wright story will continue to dominate political headlines.
Mitt Romney's attempt directly to address his Mormonism last year never decisively put the issue to rest for some voters.

OMG! That is ... so very not PC! I like it!
Article from the Daily Mail on “the truth about Michelle Obama’s working class credentials”
If that’s his plan, it’s a really, really stupid one. So, I hope it is!
His internal polls must be falling like a rock for him to do something this desperate. A major speech will only highlight the problem and focus more attention on it.
I’m counting on it.
..”divisions of the past”...”social gospel”...
Hey Barry! It’s not about RACE, it’s about STUPID!
I heard (with my own ears) how Wright told how he thought America deserved 9-11. Lets see Mr. Obama spin that one.
Obama may say White America just doesn’t get what its like to be Black. Then complain about how America’s racial divisions have tormented Blacks and how he will break down all divisions to give everyone hope.
Being against special quotas and set-asides for blacks is racist.
Not being perpetually sorry for the continuing effect that slavery has on blacks is racist.
Hey, I’m all for your color blind society, and for treating people equally based on behavior and merit,
but it will NOT be allowed. There’s too much power in it for the grievance industry.
Obama’s programs will include removing “no child left behind” and instituting “no grievance left behind”.
"We, as a nation, have endured centuries of pain, of suffering, of division, from the perpetuation of racial divides and divisions. I seek to rise above that, and to turn a new focus onto those perceptions and preoccupations that reverberate down the generations to where we stand today. A today where, both in politics and the pulpit, we remain mired in a cesspool of charges and countercharges, incriminations and recriminations, accusations and denial. And a future free from all of that - a future of hope, a future of unity, a future of respect, tolerance and community in this land of ours..."
There Obama, I just wrote it for you. You can have it for free.
“Ummmm, I wasn't there for that speech. In fact, I slept through all of the Rev's sermons.”
(IF LOVIN' THE U.S. IS WRONG) I DON'T WANT TO HEAR WRIGHT
Tune: "(If Lovin' You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right" Original
If lovin' the U.S. is wrong
I don't want to hear Wright
If joinin' his church means hearin' his hatred
I'd up and change belongin' tonight
Obama, your pastor says it's a shame
It's a downright disgrace
America's problems, all the blame
Is the fault of the white man's race
Barack, you say it's the future
And healing is in your plan
But if you can't leave this kind of hate
Believe me, yes we can
If lovin' the U.S. is wrong
I don't want to hear Wright
If lovin' the U.S. is wrong
I don't want to hear Wright
Am I wrong to smell
The sewage he loves to spew?
Knowin' you wanna lead, then why do you waffle
Defendin' you know who?
And am I wrong to question
Your ability to unite,
Knowin' you got someone there at church
Dividin' black and white?
And are you wrong to give your tithe
To a racist man?
And is he wrong for tryin' to get God
Not to bless but instead to damn?
If lovin' the U.S. is wrong
I don't want to hear Wright
If lovin' the U.S. is wrong
I don't want to hear Wright . . .
Are you wrong to give your tithe
To a racist man?
And is he wrong for tryin' to get God
Not to bless but instead to damn?
If lovin' the U.S. is wrong
I don't want to hear Wright
If lovin' the U.S. is wrong
I don't want to hear Wright
I don't want to hear Wright
If it means hearin' his hatred
I don't want to hear Wright
If it means black against white . . .
What Me Worry?
Not just internal- from The Corner this morning:
Polling Wright [Kathryn Jean Lopez]
Rasmussen:
Most voters, 56%, said Wrights comments made them less likely to vote for Obama. That figure includes 44% of Democrats. Just 11% of voters say they are more likely to vote for Obama because of Wrights comments.
This is disturbing:
However, among African-Americans, 29% said Wrights comments made them more likely to support Obama. Just 18% said the opposite while 50% said Wrights comments would have no impact.

I would prefer for that to happen ONLY AFTER he secures the nomination. I still think HRC is the more formidable candidate in November.
