The Early Show did its best this morning to help Barack Obama dig out of the hole he's dug for himself with his close association with Jeremiah Wright.
In a set-up segment, CBS's Dean Reynolds rhetorically asked: "the question is whether the rhetoric is so remarkable, because in African-American churches pastors often seek to rouse their congregants to self-reliance by speaking harshly about the country's troubled racial past and the need to overcome it."
Nice try, but how does accusing the US government of introducing AIDS and giving black people drugs equate to a call for self-reliance?
Reynolds concluded by stating the Obama campaign is concerned that its candidate has been "victimized" in the same way the Trinity church claims Rev. Wright has.
Then it was on to a Russ Mitchell interview of the Rev. Dr. Calvin Butts, III of Harlem's famed Abyssinian Baptist Church. The thrust of Mitchell's questions and Rev. Butts' responses was that the controversy is being blown out of proportion, that fiery rhetoric is a tradition in black churches with roots in the Bible and even in the words of Jesus. Moreover, it would be wrong to expect congregants to criticize their pastors' words.

‘swhy I quite watching any news from CBS.
Rev. Calvin Butts suggests Rev. Wright just walking in the footsteps of Jesus. Ping to Today show list.
These Churches intentionally stir up racial hate to fill the collection plates. End of story.
Judas goat.
Thanks for the ping. Thanks for watching/reporting, Mark.
CBS is the last place on earth to any say on who the Lord Jesus Christ is or what He proclaimed.
White guilt is suicide.
Obama’s crazy uncle is the verbal equivalent of a pyromaniac.
Obama laid down a gauntlet when he said he was never present when this so-called pastor who is no more than a hate mongerer got out of line. He could lay down that gauntlet because he was confident of two things. The media would never do the investigation necessary to prove him wrong, and this congregation would act more like a gang than any kind of congregation and would never rat him out for being present when they ALL knew that he was.
Just a bit of a stretch, eh?
David Gergen jumped the shark in 1993 when he helped salvage the Clinton presidency.
My (white) pastor of my large, growing (largely white) church says every Monday his email inbox is filled with all kinds of criticism!
No matter how fast or how long they try to spin this it’s a stench that he will never wash off.
Many thanks as always, PG — truly my pleasure.
it would be wrong to expect congregants to criticize their pastors words.
Maybe this is why very few Peoples Temple congregants dared to criticize Jim Jones.
Actually, Obama’s pastor reminds me of the “Reverend” Jim Jones. Same style, same anti-American rhetoric.
Rhetoric full of lies is found in the bible, Rev, but it is the Pharisees doing it, and Jesus rebuking them. So Rev, if you want to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, stop being a Pharisee.
I thought that was the Clinton Broadcasting System! What they doing protecting Osama Obama?
