He's been fasting for nearly three weeks, gaining little notice even from the target of his protest.
But Jerry Peace Activist Rubin is willing to refrain from eating for at least another three weeks and then another three weeks after that and then. ... Well, you get the idea.
His goal: Persuade Ralph Nader to drop his quadrennial bid for the presidency - or at least explain to Rubin why he's running again in 2008.
Rubin, who has launched more than 30 fasts over the past 25 years, is worried that Nader will play a spoiler role, as he believes he did in 2000 and 2004, taking away votes from the Democratic nominee.
Although he is generally nonpartisan, Rubin says he believes there is a better chance of ending the war in Iraq if a Democrat wins the presidency in November.
"We need Ralph Nader's help. We don't need another divisive presidential campaign," he said Saturday as he moved into the middle of the third week of his juice-only fast.
So far, Rubin says, Nader has ignored him. A spokesman for Nader's campaign said Saturday the candidate would have no comment.
As for how long he'll hold out, Rubin noted that he once fasted for 103 days.
The wiry 64-year-old, who went to court four years ago to legally add "Peace Activist" as his middle name, has stopped eating to protest everything from war to war toys to nuclear power.
"It's open-ended," he said of his current fast. "I'm going to go as long as I can without jeopardizing my health. I'm not planning to be a martyr but I'm hoping to make a point."
Sounds like a self-parody. If more libs resorted to these sorts of tactics, we wouldn’t have anywhere near as many as we do now.
All the more reason for Nader to run and keep running.
Yeah, riiiight.
Nader would not be amused by that. Just look at all the saturated fat in a Ruth's Chris steak or the butter used on a lobster.
He should ask Cindy “Mother Moonbat” Sheehan for her recipe for a “fast shake” that somehow doesn’t count.
I don’t understand why he doesn’t perch in a tree. Does he really expect Nader to pay any attention to him if he’s only fasting? Now perching in a tree while fasting... That would be very effective.
Just waste away Jerry Peace Activist Rubin!....just waste away! I’ll eat a porterhouse steak to celebrate your passing!
This is really sad. To me, without seeing any details, it is clear that intervention by a psychiatrist is overdue.
Physical or mental?
If the latter, you're late.
(He’s been fasting for nearly three weeks, gaining little notice even from the target of his protest.)
...but the AP comes to the rescue of this leftist, as usual. I bet that if someone started a hunger strike regarding abortion, they would let him die without mentioning a word in print.
Everyone on the left end of the political spectrum is in need of some sort of therapy. Political theater for these people is good way of attracting attention to themselves, similar to suicide.
Thirty fasts over 25 years and Jerry is 64! I guess swing dieting won’t kill you after all.
Funniest part is Nader isn’t paying attention to Jerry! Wow if you are Jerry Rubin Peace Activist, for 35 year’s that has just got to hurt.
I would like to stand in front of him eating some Krispy Kremes saying “mmm, this is SO good.” LOL.
Yeh right. And the AP is generally unbiased.
I was sitting behind a Catholic priest in a meeting a few weeks ago. A gentleman came up and was asking about fasting for Lent. The man said that he was of the understanding that he could eat toast and drink juice in the evening and wanted to know if that was correct. The priest told him that actually, he could even eat a grilled cheese sandwich, as long as he prayed continuously while eating it.
Now, I realize I'm not well versed in Catholicism. Southern Baptist boy here. But, I just assumed fasting meant fasting . . . as in NO food. Am I wrong about that?
Jerry Rubin is dead, along with Abbie Hoffman, Howdy Doody, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin and Spiro Agnew.
Timothy: I asked Faddah O'Flaherty whether it was OK to smoke while I was praying, and he said no, it's a sacrilege.
Kevin: Oh? He told me the opposite....but of course, you have to know how to ask.
Timothy: Oh?
Kevin: Yeah. I asked him if it was OK to pray while I was smoking.
Fasting is a lot, LOT stricter amongst the Eastern Churches. We used to observe the traditional Russian Orthodox liturgical calendar, which had approx. 180 fast days per year, and whoa, it was rigorous.
If he wants to starve himself to death, why should anyone care....Starvation is painless.
