LAS VEGAS -- The central figure in a hotel ricin scare last month has emerged from a coma, FBI agents said Friday...
...While he has become cognizant, federal agents said, Von Bergendorff is still in critical condition. Police are questioning him at the hospital, trying to determine why he had so much of the poison.

That would induce many cases of respritory failure and possibly cardiac arrest.
Ricin is nasty stuff.
Inhalation: Within a few hours of inhaling significant amounts of ricin, the likely symptoms would be respiratory distress (difficulty breathing), fever, cough, nausea, and tightness in the chest. Heavy sweating may follow as well as fluid building up in the lungs (pulmonary edema). This would make breathing even more difficult, and the skin might turn blue. Excess fluid in the lungs would be diagnosed by x-ray or by listening to the chest with a stethoscope. Finally, low blood pressure and respiratory failure may occur, leading to death. In cases of known exposure to ricin, people having respiratory symptoms that started within 12 hours of inhaling ricin should seek medical care.

That would be a few ounces of it. Ideal dispersion of it though ... that's the trick.

(wiki):
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) gives a possible minimum figure of 500 micrograms for the lethal dose of Ricin in humans if exposure is from injection or inhalation.[1] A pinhead-sized amount can kill an adult.

From the pics I saw on another thread,it looked like maybe
two teaspoons or so,,,(note [1] above),,,

Thanks for posting this. It's
very interesting, and Von Bergendorff has a lot 'splaining to do. At least 99.9% of Americans don't check into Vegas hotels with vials of riacin on them.
I'm curious as to why he was in financial trouble. Just pure speculation, but did he lose a lot of money in a Vegas casino?

That would be a few ounces of it. Ideal dispersion of it though ... that's the trick. They could put it in the soy sauce at the Imperial Palace buffet - it would make the food there safer. ;)

The cousin, Thelon, worked in a hospital-—could he actually be the source of the ricin?
