Commission to probe Berkeley Marine melees
By Josh Richman
Wednesday, March 12th, 2008 at 9:41 am in Berkeley.
Berkeleys Police Review Commission will hold a hearing at 6 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, March 13, in the North Berkeley Senior Center at 1901 Hearst Ave. on Berkeley Police officers treatment of antiwar protestors outside the U.S. Marine Corps recruiting office on Shattuck Avenue.
Organizers from World Cant Wait, CodePink and Copwatch collected petition signatures to force the hearing, claiming their members have been violently attacked by Berkeley Police Department riot squads. From their news release:
In the city of free speech, protesters have been harassed, punched, threatened, and struck with clubs while nonviolently opposing the war and committing acts of nonviolent civil resistance (civil disobedience). These protests continue as the March 19 fifth anniversary of the Iraq war approaches, with nationwide protest actions planned for that week and March 19 itself.
[snip]
The use of violence by Berkeley riot police against anti-war demonstrations of an obviously nonviolent character, three times in a row, is completely unjustified, very likely politically charged, and should be denounced by the Berkeley City Council, stated World Cant Wait organizer Giovanni Jackson. Our means of protest range from chanting to signs and banners, street theater to marches and nonviolent civil resistance actions. We are demanding an end to a criminal, illegitimate war of aggression, and we will not be silenced.
If the protestors are alive, they were treated too well.
Sooooo... now we have Winter Pinko hearings, eh?
I hope Berkeley spends every dime of their city budget investigating this. Every dime.
Interestingly about 34 seconds into the video they show a guy violently throwing himself at the police.

Berkeley Police Review Commission To Held Special Meeting
POSTED: 6:16 am PDT March 13, 2008
The meeting will open with a report from the Police Review Commission's Officer, followed by a 20-minute presentation from the groups World Can't Wait, Code Pink and Berkeley Copwatch, the aide said.
The Police Review Commission received a petition with more than 65 Berkeley citizens' signatures requesting a public hearing to discuss Police Department conduct in response to demonstrations held by protestors outside of the recruitment center at 64 Shattuck Ave. on Feb. 12, 15, and 22, the PRC's meeting agenda states. The petition also seeks to discuss "crowd control policies in general," according to the Police Review Commission.
According to Berkeley's Municipal Code as stated in the PRC's meeting agenda, a petition of 50 or more citizens filed with the office of the Secretary of the Commission requires the Police Review Commission to hold a special meeting to respond, hold a hearing, and inquire into the concerns raised in the petition.
A video will be shown and oral testimony will be included as part of the groups' presentation, officials said.
Following the presentation, the PRC will listen to public comment on the issue, according to the agenda. Afterward, the PRC's nine commissioners will be able to comment, and will then recess into closed session to review and take any potential action on the citizen petition, the meeting agenda states.
The PRC will then report on the action taken during closed session.
The commission will meet at 6 p.m. at the North Berkeley Senior Center, 1901 Hearst Ave.
Written comment concerning the public hearing can be sent to Police Review Commission, Victoria Urbi, PRC Officer, 1947 Center St., 3rd Floor, Berkeley, CA 94704.
Berkeley police Lt. Andrew Greenwood would not comment on the upcoming hearing, but said that the Police Department has and will continue to keep lines of communication with demonstrators and their organizers open.

BOYCOTT BERKELEY ping list
To be removed or added, please FReepmail me.
The police have been coddling them like spoiled kids, now they are complaining?
Those videos clearly showing the commie skunks disobeying police orders and pushing up against them.
Hopefully the police learned their lesson, but I doubt they have permission to be to blantently law-enforcing on the city council's bit**es, the code pink skankers.
“Berkeley police Lt. Andrew Greenwood ...said that the Police Department has and will continue to keep lines of communication with demonstrators and their organizers open.”
What the heck for? There needs to be NO communication at all except for the Miranda reading when a protester steps ONE INCH out of line. The photos and videos all show protestors taunting, throwing fake punches, throwing trash, yelling obscenities and all kinds of things to get the officers to react. The officers NEVER reacted. Even on the few occasions they had to arrest people they did it almost deferentially.
Yah? Well, the US Military needs to go in there, declare Martial Law, and arrest anyone who even LOOKS like an anti-military protestor.
Code Pinko are the REAL traitors!
My only hope is that the rest of the country (I would if I could) GET there, in force, and produce some “demonstrations” of what stupidity can do.
I’d not only take photos, but I’d bring popcorn.
The bestids ought to thank their lucky stars that they live in America, where their right to protest is protected. In most countries, they would all be dead by now.
And the city council should be lined up according to height and measured for their “worth.” I’m sure they would all be found wanting.
If the Continental Soldiers could only see for what they sacrificed and suffered at Valley Forage for.
On second thought, it is more mericilul to them than they can’t.
Shits and parasites like those in those videos are a waste of good oxygen.
Disagree ....posse comitatus - you don’t use military force.
I say - give the Berzerkly people what they want - we should unilaterally withdraw all federal offices from Berkeley - including post offices, federal agencies (FBI, etc.).
Then -close off all on and off ramps for any interstate highways that go through Berkeley. Put up barricades at city limits and prevent the movement of people in and out of the People’s Republic of Berkeley (PRB) without proper passport, etc.
Let Berkeley know that no federal monies can be given to aid the PRB Berkeley - and if they are attacked by any nation-state, or terrorist groups - we will give NO assistance.
Let’s leave the PRB to become their own wonderful nirvana or hell-hole, based on the implementation of their policies - unfettered by the US, or aided by the US!
Mike
You were just a little (?) more detailed than me, but the idea is the same. If they think they are an island, let it be so. Cut them off from everything they hold dear.
Berkeley has been the birthplace of cowards for almost a century. Let them have the life they want...unprotected but isolated. Let’s see how long it takes for the WOT to get in there and convince a few people of the error of their ways.
Thank you for the ping.
Nothing a commie fool does, surprises me, it is all part of the master plan.........foster hate for the leaders, read the manifesto.
Ping.
You made me choke on an ice cube! LOL!
Well, maybe Code Pink should call the Marines again?
