Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has used promises of change to build a lead over one-time front-runner Hillary Clinton.
But if the multiple references to change in Bill Clintons speech Wednesday were any indication, the Clinton camp is not about to allow Obama to monopolize that word.
Shes the best change-maker Ive ever known better than me, the former president said during an appearance at Greater Johnstown High School.
Little more than a week removed from much-needed primary wins in Ohio and Texas, and with the critical Pennsylvania primary slated for April 22, the Clinton campaign rolled into Johnstown Wednesday afternoon.
And Democrat-dominated Cambria County responded, showing enthusiasm both outdoors in a line that stretched halfway around the high school and indoors, with a crowd cramming into the schools gym to hear Clinton speak.
The nations 42nd president delivered a 45-minute, policy-packed speech that might have seemed more like a social studies class for students who mixed into the audience.
But Clinton also flashed his trademark charisma, getting laughs and frequent rounds of applause as his laid out his wifes policies and promised that she would restore the middle-class dream.
He detailed Hillary Clintons plans to make America energy-independent, spending several minutes on the possibility of developing a car that gets 100 miles per gallon.
Other topics included:
Making college education more affordable, in part by increasing federal grants and tuition tax credits.
Investing in manufacturing with a modern approach, making tomorrows products with tomorrows materials.
Withdrawing troops from Iraq and making Iraqi leaders more responsible for that countrys future. Clinton said the U.S. military is overtaxed and just about broken.
Improving Americas standing in the international community. Bill Clinton used that topic to promote his wifes foreign-policy experience.
Shed be the best commander-in-chief and the best diplomat-in-chief, he said.
Health care was a central part of Bill Clintons speech, with the former president calling Americas insurance system insane.
Hillary Clintons plan would require coverage for all Americans, with Bill Clinton promising that nobody gets charged an arm and a leg for that insurance.
In one of the few direct jabs at Obama during his speech, Clinton said his wifes opponent has a plan that would leave millions of people without health coverage.
Obamas campaign said the difference is relatively simple: Obama would not mandate that everyone buy insurance.
Sen. Obama does not believe that the reason millions of Americans lack health insurance is because nobody forced them to buy it, spokesman Matt Lehrich said.
Thats why he has put forth a universal health-care plan that will cover every American and reduce annual health-care premiums for the typical family by $2,500.
That back-and-forth will continue across Pennsylvania in the coming weeks. The Clinton campaign already is canvassing the state with appearances by Hillary, Bill and Chelsea Clinton.
In an e-mail Wednesday, Clinton officials accused the Obama campaign of turning its attention away from Pennsylvania.
Obamas camp, of course, begs to differ.
We recognize that we come into Pennsylvania as underdogs in this campaign, Lehrich said. But we look forward to the challenge.
WTF has she done to change anything of substance?
More and more dried up liberal hags are going with the pants suit look today.
I always pictured her as one who would try to keep the change.
The change-maker was not Hillary Rodham, a minor figure in the House Judiciary Committee investigation, but the late Tony Ulasewicz.
Shes the best change-maker Ive ever known better than me, the former president said “
Then she can get her ass a job at Walmart when her aspirations go down in flames.
I guess Wednesday's arent considered school days in this town? Did the town shut this school down for the day so the Xlinton's can have a rally there? Nice use of public facilities and funds.
change maker? is that what they call it now?
See, that's what doing lots of coke will do to the mind. He really meant to say that Hillary is a 'dollar taker' and not a"change maker!" When she gets through with us, there won't be any change left.
“Change-maker”
... as in cashier.
snort———who let the dog out?
From change to change maker, I cannot contain myself.
WTF, "change change, hope change ... ", what a pantload from Big Ears.
I'll give you punk-arse no-nothing peasants some change to think about when I get back in the White House. You'll be thanking moi, your Queen, if you have any change at all in your pocket!
The story says it - this is a democrat town. The school was shut down at 12:30 p.m. so the sheeple could begin shuffling in at 1. Democrats have had control of Johnstown for decades, this was a steel mill town 25 years ago. The economy never improves, only gets worse, and the Democrats keep getting re-elected. Perfect constituents for either Hill or Barry. Sadly, us few conservatives make little impact at the polls.
Yeah, she’ll take your dollar and give you ten cents back.
And, furthermore, husband of Hillary, we know she knows how to change her voice, but it's the same old retread 90's stalinism no matter which way you want to define change.
.
LOL!
Priceless potlatch!
That needs to be on a webpage with opera BGsound!
