New Haven (AP) _ An eighth-grade honors student at a New Haven school has been suspended for buying a bag of candy at school.
Michael Sheridan, a student at Sheridan Middle School, was suspended from school for one day, barred from attending an honors student dinner and stripped of his title as class vice president.
Officials say he was punished because he bought a bag of Skittles from another student.
A school spokeswoman says the New Haven school system banned candy sales and fundraisers in 2003 as part of the districtwide school wellness policy.
Spokeswoman Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo says there are no candy sales allowed in schools, period.
The student who sold the candy also was suspended.
Obviously this school is a “candy free zone”
OMG! Can you imagine if he bought an aspirin ? Or drank a coke? On the other hand, he could probably engage in public sex on the playground (oops, they don’t allow playgrounds anymore, too dangerous) and that would be OK.

Like Jonah Goldberg says:
NICE FACISISM
And people wonder why there is a loss of respect for authority these days
Oh, for crying out freakin' loud on a stick with a marshmallow on it.
“An Excellent Lesson for him - bureaucracies are completely worthless. Hopefully, a new FReeper has just been recruited.”
Although the whole thing really sucks, I immediately thought the same thing. Indoctrinating kids K-12 is one way to go (bad) while one incident as this will turn a child into a conservative in 2 seconds (hopefully).
Let it be said in defence of the Administration that this student has received a true education in the realities of today’s America.
Now it’s his call as to whether to buy into it or not. Grtade VIII is not too young to learn.
"THEN THEY CAME FOR FOODS THAT CONTAIN TRANS FATS AND I DIDN'T SPEAK UP BECAUSE I AM A HEALTHY EATER AND BESIDES, THIS DID NOT REALLY AFFECT ME.........
"NEXT THEY CAME FOR .........
Okay all of you defenders of the Nanny-Nazi-Police-State (AND ONE OF THE BIGGEST OFFENDERS WAS ELLIOT #9 SPITZER) having the power over regulating every one of our personal (LEGAL) activities and choices, we tried to warn you, but you dismissed us as fear-mongering dotes.
We tried to tell you this was all about POWER as opposed to legitimate "health issues," but you would not listen.
Well, the proverbial chickens are coming home to roost. How do you like it now????
Skittles..THE DIVERSITY CANDY!!
“Maybe the school should hire a candy enforcer to search the subjects ( I mean students) for candy possession.”
You laugh, but at the public elementary school in my neighborhood, they search kids’ lunchboxes for contraband sweets (all sweets are banned). And my neighbors wonder why my kids will be going to private school...
He should have turned the candy pusher into the SS and gotten the Blue Max from the principal. Of course, he’d be beaten to a pulp.
The parents should also punish the student by removing him permanently from the school as a show of support for this action this school has taken. They should immediatly homeschool the student even though that would deny the school the funding they get for him.
The only way to ‘teach’ schools, is to remove the $$$$$ from them.
As Limbaugh has said, something really stupid can be made (as my earlier post), and then it turns out to be true somewhere!
Wells at least the elementary kids in your area will have a safe, candy free school.
Maybe as a side benefit, they will also learn a little bit of math and English.
Ms. Decarlo’s e-mail in case you are intereted:

Now, let me tell you-- kids in our middle school bring their own candy and they eat it all day long [and that's no exaggeration]. They will have no teeth by the time they're 35. Dentistry is the career of the future.
But, pulp is from fruit soooooo, I think it's a good thing. Well, at least allowed in school.
Has anyone here ever met someone with double-barrelled name that they liked?
Just thinking of my real-life experiences.
Excuse me? If I choose to have my child have a PB&J for lunch.. that would be banned?
If I was a parent of a child of that school.. I would be nailing the school board to the wall at each and every meeting.....
Can state Wellness Enforcement Officers be far behind?
