Suspect arrested in Carson case
By Sam Spies, Staff writer
CHAPEL HILL - HILLSBOROUGH — Demario James Atwater has been charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Eve Carson.
Moments ago he had a first appearance before Orange County Superior Court Judge Alonzo Coleman.
Atwater, 21, said only that he understood the charge against him.
He will be held without bond.
Atwater had an abrasion on his right cheek. he wore a black shirt, green pants and black and green athletic shoes.
He has been provisionally appointed a public defender.
In a development that may be related to the Carson case, police have approached a house on Shepherd Street in Durham and after 3 p.m. started demanding that an inhabitant come out.
Durham officers, who brought an assault vehicle to the scene, are referring questions about the situation to Chapel Hill police. About 20 Durham and SBI officers are at the scene.
Earlier today, Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall confirmed that a man had been taken into custody in the case.
“Somebody has been detained,” Woodall said this morning. But he said at the time that he was not familiar with the circumstances. It also was not clear whether charges had been filed.
Also this morning, an assistant public defender and an investigator with the public defender’s office entered the Chapel Hill police station, where the person detained reportedly was being questioned. The lawyer, Susan Seahorn, and investigator, Beth Winston, declined to say why they were there.
A few hours later, Orange Superior Court Judge Carl Fox arrived at the police department. Authorities did not offer an explanation for Fox’s presence.
Radio station WCHL this morning cited unnamed sources as saying that an arrest was made overnight in Durham and the arrestee was turned over to the Chapel Hill police. Durham television station WTVD showed video of heavily armed police officers arresting a man at a home on Rosedale Avenue in Durham.
Carson, 22, of Athens, Ga., was found shot to death a week ago today on a neighborhood street north of the campus. She was the student body president and a Morehead-Cain scholar.

This kid has seen his last day of freedom. Still curious if this will turn out to have any gang connection.
Whoa...
MSNBC reporting the second suspect is now in custody.
Ok- so apparently he is the guy in the back seat- the one still missing is the driver.
I wonder what the victim was doing outside at that early hour of the morning. Has that been explained?
It doesn’t need to be explained.
It has been, though.
Don't matter.
Once ya get one, he'll rat out the rest...No honor among thieves and criminals. Besides generally, the first to squeal gets the deal.
Ka-plow! Poor girl and her family, because of this self centered egocentric prick.
Sorry, nasty mood today.
Well, it looks like someone slipped and fell. Maybe their will be a gun accident.
I assume they were in the jurisdiction of Mike Nifong, who must have been busy chasing innocent (white) lacrosse players, whose prosecution played better for political purposes.
