Lose and Learn (A Nativist Campaign Failed to Save the Hassert Seat)
Wall Street Journal ^ | 11 March 2008 | Editorial Staff

Posted on 03/11/2008 5:46:35 PM PDT by shrinkermd

Democrat Bill Foster won the Illinois House seat occupied for more than two decades by former Republican Speaker Dennis Hastert, who retired before the end of his term. The result shows that Democrats not only have political enthusiasm on their side but that Illinois Senator Barack Obama, who endorsed Mr. Foster, is a campaign asset down ballot, at least in his home state.

...To his credit, Mr. Oberweis did talk about lower taxes, smaller government and other Republican themes. But as in his past campaigns, the issue he hit hardest was illegal immigration. One of his infamous Senate ads featured Mr. Oberweis in a helicopter over Soldier Field complaining that the number of illegal immigrants who enter the U.S. every day could fill the stadium in a week.

Mr. Foster called for comprehensive reform that includes a path to citizenship for illegals and deflected his opponent's over-the-top rhetoric by reminding voters that a subcontractor at one of Mr. Oberweis's ice cream shops was caught employing illegal immigrants.

Republicans such as Mr. Oberweis remain convinced that illegal immigration is a winning issue. And if the electorate were comprised mostly of Internet screechers and cable news anchors, they might be right. But the fact that Mr. McCain, the Presidential candidate most closely associated with immigration tolerance, has outlasted Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee and other immigration hardliners, should be an indication that other issues are foremost in the minds of even GOP voters.

but when Walberg won they never bothered to back him against the democrat

In Randy's case, they not only ran another no-name jerk against him in the primary -- they used RNCC money to do so.

He got no support in the general and even had the despicable Jim "Gay Blade" Kolbe favoring the Dim (and she is Dim), Gabrielle Giffords.

but kicking out illigals already here is very unrealistic and impossible to attempt as well as inhuman to achieve

Defeatism masquerading as realism.

It hasn't been tried. All prior deportation initiatives - the early 20's, early 30's, and the fabulous Operation Wetback in '54 - were stunning successes.

And I have no idea where you live, but having spent the first 18 years of my life 60 miles north of the border back when they routinely deported any illegals, I can tell you there was not a word of Spanish to be heard for decades, even there on the border.

And the narcotraficantes and illegales of Mexico were terrified of U.S. law enforcement, which they should be.

But the current contempt for U.S. law is the result of the consummation of the '60s attitude of ignoring inconvenient laws, aided and abetted by arrogant judges. The criminals of Mexico (that would be most of the government, and virtually all of its businessmen) figured this out and the resulting chaos and invasion is what came of it.

But these guys are punks - and they respect force. I guarantee you, if the U.S. moves against them in a hard way, they won't fight back - they'll realize that we aren't a bunch of cowards.

And in Mexico, if you don't do that, they will think that of you.

And then you're cooked.

So don't talk like a squeamish little coward and make excuses for why we shouldn't act. We have a right to and they know it. When we do so, they'll realize they're dealing with men again, and not a bunch of little boys.

WSJ has a blind spot for illegal aliens. The paper has no credibility on the issue.

The problem is that our immigration war is not necessarily with the illegals themselves at this point but with fellow Americans right HERE at home -- albeit leftist Americans! -- and here at home we'll loose this war, along with elections and political power for a long time to come if we persist in pushing on this front.

I agree with your sentiments, but to kick out illegals who've lived here sometimes for decades? I just can't get my head around how that can be achieved. It's unrealistic and just won't ever happen. It'll ricochet around the world.

As I mentioned before I believe focusing on securing the borders is much more vital and achievable.

That's how I see it.

The Republican State congress in Arizona have passed many anti-illegal alien bills. Those that were veteod by our rat governor wound up being passed by the voters in ballot initiatives. ...And an interesting statistic is that hispanic U.S. citizens voted 47% in favor of anti-illegal initiatives.

"Nativist" is just the new buzz-word of the open borders crowd.

It’ll only give ammunition to the REAL psycho leftists to color us as demented

Letting them stay here will give even more ammunition to the psycho leftists in the form of twenty million new registered leftist Democrats when the illegals are inevitably given citizenship.

BTW, if it's possible to label people demented for wanting to boot illegal aliens out, then we have no border and the country is lost.

I just can't get my head around how that can be achieved

One illegal at a time.

Do that enough times, and the rest will get the message.

It's happening as we speak in Arizona...where I'm from.

No nonsense laws were passed. So they kicked, they screamed, they huffed, they puffed....just like my kid....and then....they had to leave.

Because even the courts couldn't give them a pass. The citizens of Arizona held fast, and didn't give in to the Leftist hustle: lawsuits, name calling, guilt tripping, finger pointing, race baiting, threats of violence, actual violence, whining, crying, whatever they can dream up....nope, they finally ran into a wall: real Americans who said, "these are our laws. obey them now".

Read post 28 and 29. They add things I would have added too.

It's a matter of will. And let the Left in this country scream. The only thing the world will take from it is this: the Americans are serious about their laws. Don't screw with them.

As I write, I am listening to Rush Limbaugh deny that he has ever suggested the 12 million illegals be deported. Indeed, he sounds upset since Senator Obama has accused him of thaking this position.

Just thought you might like to hear this recent news from Rush Limbaugh.
