Governor Negotiating To Cut Deal With Federal Prosecutors

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Gov. Eliot Spitzer is set to resign Wednesday, sources tell CBS 2 Political Reporter Marcia Kramer, but insiders say he's going to use the resignation as a bargaining chip to cut a deal with federal prosecutors and he won't step down until that happens. The talks have been going on since Tuesday morning.

The governor's fate rests in the hands of two people: U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia and Michele Hirshman, the head of his legal defense team. The deal they cut will determine Spitzer's future.

I don’t see why they should cut any “deal” with him. He has nothing to offer them.

Why should the feds offer Spitzer any inducements to resign? Just indict him and let nature takes its course.

One reason is because a jury trial might include some diehard Democrats who have boinked prostitutes themselves.

I hope the Spitz drags this out so long that they have to impeach him and drag that out too.

Exactly. The longer this goes on, the more it hurts the DemocRATS.

They’re probably negotiating with the prosecutors to have him resign and not get indicted.

I agree. I don’t see how his resignation in lieu of impeachment affects the US Attorney’s case. If they are willing to deal this away for a quick exit, they are making a mistake.

I agree. Why should Spitzer get a deal?

I don’t think prosecutors (or courts) should have the power to overturn elections in this manner.

If he’s guilty, indict, convict, and jail him.

Resignation should be up to Spitzer.

Sleazy til the end...holding the office hostage.

Nail his hide to the wall. If he tries and cut a deal in exchange for his resignation, then very publically arrest his sorry backside and see how well he guvernates from behind bars.

"One reason is because a jury trial might include some diehard Democrats who have boinked prostitutes themselves."

Also there might be mud on both sides of the aisle. Corruption like this could be far and wide and the US Attorney might be under pressure to settle this case quietly to avoid a public spectacle and other officials brought into the debacle

I don’t know anyone in the US Attorney’s office in New York, but I think it’s a safe guess that many of them voted for Spitzer, so it’s not a slam dunk that he won’t get a sweetheart deal.

It’s going to involve a resignation at the least, because he’s hurting Democrats. I doubt he gets jail time. Probably a fine.
