"Oedipus is funny -- that's the structure of funny," Alan Alda's character declares in the film Crimes and Misdemeanors. "'Who did this terrible thing to our city?' 'Oh my god, it was me.' See? That's funny."

Judging by such a standard, the staggering news that ethics-crusader New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer has shattered his political career because he couldn't resist the allure of a high-priced hooker, is high comedy indeed.

No doubt, there is an element of tragedy in this tale. Spitzer's wife Silda, who was forced to stand by his side in a hasty press briefing yesterday afternoon, as well as his three daughters, who are old enough to follow the news, should have our compassion.

But Spitzer himself does not deserve an ounce of sympathy for the public humiliation he is set to endure, because he built his career on the public humiliation of others.

Eliot Ness finally got Al capone down on tax evasion.
This Eliot was finally taken down on prostitution.

The bottom line is: whatever it takes to get the bad guys.

A few months later, Spitzer was reprimanded by Andrew Cuomo, his successor in the Attorney General’s office, for using state police to dig up dirt on his political opponent, Republican Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno. After a Clintonesque public apology, Spitzer was able to emerge from the scandal, but as it turned out, the postman would ring twice.
-

can’t forget and that is one of the reasons why Spitzer had very low approval ratings even before this scandal.

No, she wasn't.

So what do we think, will he go on Oprah and cry? or hold a press conference and admit he is a homosexual?; either one could work.

The smart woman would make a huge show of packing his suitcase and leaving it out front of the governor's mansion for the whole world to see.

On the other hand she has to manage her kids’ emotions in a time like this so perhaps She will wait.

But, she had to know what sort of an SOB this guy is and so she got what she deserved for getting involved and staying. I have little sympathy for political wives.

My bet is he's holed up somewhere threatening to engage in a little mutually assured destruction if he's not allowed to wriggle off the hook...

"I have little sympathy for political wives."

I agree. They're willing to look the other way in exchange for the trappings of the office. Hillary is a great example.

"The smart woman would make a huge show of packing his suitcase and leaving it out front of the governor's mansion for the whole world to see."

In the real world, yeah. But not the smart political woman. Not yet, anyways. She wants to demonstrate to potential husband #2 that she won't throw him under the bus if times get tough.

Politics and Hollywood -- where the rules don't seem to apply.

Will Governor Spitzer submit to a swabbing of his cheek for DNA if he "merely" pleads guilty to a misdemeanor?

New York Plan for DNA Data in Most Crimes, May 14, 2007

The governor’s proposal would order DNA taken from those found guilty of any misdemeanor, including minor drug offenses, harassment or unauthorized use of a credit card, according to a draft of his bill. It would not cover offenses considered violations, like disorderly conduct.

.
I'm struck by the way that Spitzer apologized to his "family."

It seems a cold choice of words.

I would have expected a sorrowful man to say, "I apologize to my wife and daughters."

Actually it very well may be tax evasion that takes down Spitzer.

The reason they were investigating in the first place, was that he was taking large amounts of $, but not quite 10K out of dummy accounts.

I guess he did not remember that a law had been enacted for Homeland Security to track, accounts of tranactions that were under 10K.

The IRS is sure to be taking a very close look at his tax returns of the last couple years.
