Vatican Lists New Sinful Behavior

VATICAN CITY (AP) — A Vatican official has listed drugs, pollution, genetic manipulation and social and economic injustices as new areas of sinful behavior.

Sins increasingly manifest themselves as behavior that damages society as a whole, Monsignor Gianfranco Girotti said in an interview published Sunday by the Vatican's daily newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano.

"While sin used to concern mostly the individual, today it has mainly a social resonance, due to the phenomenon of globalization," said Girotti, who heads the Apostolic Penitentiary, a Vatican body that issues decisions on matters of conscience and grants absolutions.

Catholic teaching distinguishes between lesser venial sins and mortal sins.

Listing the new areas of sinful behavior, Girotti denounced "certain violations of the fundamental rights of human nature through experiments, genetic manipulations."

He also mentioned drugs — which "weaken the mind and obscure intelligence" — pollution, and the widening social and economic differences between the rich and the poor.

Girotti said the Catholic Church continued to be concerned by other sinful acts, including abortion and pedophilia.

He said Church authorities had reacted with "rigorous measures" to child abuse scandals within the clergy, but he also claimed that the issue had been excessively emphasized by the media.

Economic injustices? Widening social and economic differences between the rich and the poor?

Do dictators who champion for equal amounts of Marxist misery on 'their people' get a free pass while they sit in their mansions?

I'll think seriously about excommunicating myself if this Vatican official ever makes his way to be the pope.

Is it me or are these sins much easier to obey then the old ones. As a Catholic, they just made it more difficult to sin. lol.

If You read the Roman Catholic adult catechism and read the Ten Commandments it is amazing the amount of Sin we Commit.. We Catholics innocently Grew up with the Baltimore catechism that gave us a Foundation but no Adult Interpretation...This is just adding on to sin.. so we understand it is sin!

Another version of this non-story. This well meaning, low ranking Cardinal was not announcing and could not announce new church policy. He was simply pointing out areas arising in modern times can be the occasion of existing sin. The idea that we are all sinners is hardly news to most Christians.

social and economic injustices

As a good liberal, I read this to mean the government taking more than their fair share from someone who worked hard to earn it. What else could it possibly mean? /sarc

What a sad article. I lived in Naples (well, Pozzuoli) for three years as a young teenager and visited again in 2004. I have always loved the unique charm of that area.

I hope they find a way to get it cleaned up again.

I’d like to know what the Vatican’s definition of a “drug” is. Alcohol comes to mind. Drinking a few PBR’s at the end of the day can surely “weaken the mind and obscure intelligence.” Is failure to recycle treated the same as creating a three headed monkey? I’m not saying these things to be sarcastic. There is a real need for clarification here.

Gosh I’m sure glad we have the Vatican to tell us what sin is, because the Holy Spirit just can’t quite manage it on his own.

Pretty smart of the church actually! They are getting in on the ground floor, why should Gore get all the proceeds of Carbon credits? The church can sell absolution of the sin of pollution, after all God makes all the trees and plants of the field, therefor He has all an infinite number of credits to sell.
God I hate it when established Christian religions go PC, next thing you know all churches will be built so all their alters facewest so the parishioners face toward mecca.

An excellent point. Do other prescribed medications fall into this camp.

The Catholic Church seems to be perverting itself once again. And its Left-leaning chatter is becoming repulsive to me. What next, indulgences?

We still have indulgences, it’s just illegal to sell them.

I read the story from your link. That’s sad. I was stationed in Naples in the late 70’s and while it was dirty then, it was nothing like they say it is now. Naples was my favorite port whenever I went on a Med cruise.
