Attorney Mike Ciresi said this afternoon that he is dropping out of the race for the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination in Minnesota.
His decision leaves political satirist and commentator Al Franken and University of St. Thomas professor Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer as the leading Democratic candidates seeking to challenge incumbent Republican Sen. Norm Coleman.

Al will get the party endorsement and probably will defeat Coleman in Novermber.
The insane Al Franken versus someone with a hyphenated name. What a choice!

What you see in this picture is a funny man saying one thing out of the left side of his mouth, the opposite out of the other while he’s whistling dixie out his.......
Meet my future Senator...sigh...
so we already have one of three democrats who will be president...
a soon to be veto proof senate.
the barbarians are going to raid the treasury to rebuild the USSR.
Is it me or has that headline been recycled for the last 12yrs? or is it 16?
Good point. Lotsa bluster with Mike, but no game.
That is not a funny man. He’s never been funny and has failed at everything he’s done He’s a twit.
Asshat has clear shot at rodent Senate nomination in MN.
Minnesotans are really that STUPID??
Part of my brain cannot expect that this tool has an even shot of being a Senator. Really? No MN dem politicos want this seat?
MN is rodent enough that he has a shot. Remember that this is the state that elected Mondale, Dayton & Klobuchar to the Senate. Klobuchar should pray for his election, since it will instantly make her the smartest Senator.
He’s spent the last couple years sucking up to all the DFL party leaders and office holders. He’s got solid support - nobody else really stands a chance at winning the nomination. Franken vs. Coleman...guess I’ll have to check out the third party options.
“Franken vs. Coleman...guess Ill have to check out the third party options.”
Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate that Senator Coleman is far from a perfect conservative, as his 68 ACU rating in 2006 makes clear, but Franken would have an ACU score between 0 and 10. There is certainly a time and place for outting a wobbly conservative over hot coals, but a Republican Senator from Minnesota with a 68 ACU rating facing reelection against an ultraliberal with money to burn is not the time and place to do so.
And as for the general feeling I sense in this thread that Coleman is all but defeated, that sounds like a self-fulfilling prophesy to me. We can make sure that Norm Coleman wins by supporting his reelection instead of saying “he can’t win.” Remember, Coleman “couldn’t win” against Walter Mondale either, and he made Mondale the only person ever to lose statewide elections in all 50 states while running as a Democrat (MN was the one state in which Mondale had never lost). I think if we keep our cool and support Norm Coleman’s reeelction campaign, Al Franken will find out that it’s easier to play Stuart Smalley than to win a U.S. Senate seat.
(BTW, anyone else remember when Al Franken went on SNL three days before the 1988 elections and drew a map of the U.S. showing al lthe states that Dukakis would win and get to 270 EVs, and three days later George Bush was elected with over 400 electoral votes? Frankly, I don’t think that Al Franken has a good gauge of how people think, not even in Minnesota (which is liberal on economic issues but is conservative on most social issues, including abortion and guns).
outting = putting
In addition to being a RINO, I have a personal beef with him - he sexually harassed one of my closest friends. No deal.
In addition, I think there’s going to be a lot of people unhappy with the choices, paving the way for a viable third party candidate. They probably won’t win, but make a decent showing, and I’m not even sure which of the major party candidates it would benefit.
They're not stupid. They've been living in a social welfare state for so long and loving it that they'll vote for the candidate that will drop the most free alms into their outstretched, greedy hands.
Minnesotan's are smart enough to figure out that uber-socialist Franken is the most likely candidate to grease their grubby palms for the next 6 years. As liberal as Coleman can be, the nanny-state Minnesotans aren't that dumb to vote for him because he's not a 100% sure bet like Frankenstein.
