a lot of people don’t want the govt to force vaccination on their kids because of this issue

McCain needs to stay away from things he’s not well informed about in or he will get savaged.

Does McCain EVER think like a Conservative?

Based on his comments on this issue, I'd have to just ask "Does he ever think, period?". His comments on this topic reveal an frighteningly shallow understanding of science and epidemiology. We need to keep this man's hands OFF our medical system.

I don't know whats causing Autism but I hope these scientist can find out soon. Its very traumatic to a parent to see a child start out as bright and cheerful and watch them loose ground intellectually almost overnight.

McCain sounds like he's about 8 or 9 years out of date on this issue. They quit using the stuff in the required vaccines nearly a decade ago. The diagnostic rates for autism haven't changed. It's still around.

Used to be the shrinks said it was a result of a weak father and a cold mother (or was that homosexuality).

Whatever, it is almost exclusively a Caucasion disease.

Hmmm, and we thought John Edwards was out of this campaign.

To paraphrase Homer Simpson: “Science. Is there anything politicians don’t know?”

The definition of autism has broadened, which is one reason why cases are up.

Diagnosis is not by lab test, but by observation.

Could be caused by genetics, pre-natal environment, birth complications... no one knows.

McCain cares nothing about the truth. He is a scientism kool aid drinker. I guarantee he doesn’t even know that autism rates have risen despite the preservative being taken out of vaccines. McCain is an idiot plain and simple and he is the best we got.

They say the vaccines aren’t the cause of autism but haven’t addressed the issue - what is the cause - only that vaccines don’t. Their emphasis seems on their CTA than getting to the root of the cause. It’s been around long enough to have some knowledge of the cause.

The problem with McCain's statement is that, according to the CDC, mercury has been taken out of most vaccines used for children since 2001 (it is still used in some flu vaccines used mainly by the elderly). If mercury did cause the problem with autism in children, we should be seeing a dramatic drop in autism rate. A lot of the autism activist conspiracy groups claim that the CDC and government are lying and that mercury has not been taken out of vaccines and are still being used for children.

Just like his stance on global warming, this is another area where McCain doesn't have a clue. It seems when it comes to science and finance, McCain needs to take some remedial university courses, but basically he is an idiot.

I think this is an emotional issue for many. There appears to be several separate causes for autism. There is some evidence that autism may be the result of not the mercury but the over reaction of the immune system to the measles vaccine causing an autoimmune attack on the mylin sheaths in the brain. The one that that is certain is that there is not a simple diagnosis. I always recommend politicians shut up about what they don’t understand.

What do you expect from the sort of scientific mind that believes in anthropogenic global warming?

Wow did McCain ever stir up Dr. Dean Edell today on his radio show. The Dr. said McCain was probably incapable of making any important decisions based on his remarks about the vaccine controversy.

It's indisputable that autism is on the rise among children

Is that really true?

Back when I was a kid, autism was rare but serious. Usually meant that the afflicted individuals bonked their heads on the wall all day, and had no real communication with the outside world. This was a debilitating condition and obviously very difficult for the parents.

Now I hear all sorts of stuff about "autism spectrum disorders" which just don't sound all that horrible. Plenty of people (particularly scientists and engineers) go on to live happy, fulfilling lives, even though their social skills aren't quite up to par. Yet now they are labeled "autistic" and presumably medicated, or used to get extra money from the government.

I don't understand how we've gotten to the point where "geeky" behaviors are considered a disease, but boys who dress up like girls are supposed to be considered normal.

McCain is a nut job. I’m not standing in judgment though because I didn’t go through the trauma that he did. Still though, we need to see to it that the Republican Party is represented by someone who doesn’t have the most traumatized psyche in the United States.
