City bans garbage disposal units
Residents of Raleigh, N.C., face stiff penalties if they install garbage disposal units in their kitchen sinks or repair existing ones if they break.
The City Council approved the ban on Wednesday, the Raleigh Chronicle reports. The ordinance includes a fine of up to $25,000 a day.
Officials said that anyone caught with an illegal disposal unit could also face a lifetime ban on getting city water. The ban covers several municipalities around Raleigh.
The garbage disposal units, which grind up leftover food and flush it into the sewer system, lead to pipes clogged with grease. That can lead to sewage overflowing into streams or ponds.
Raleigh residents are urged to collect grease in an old can or jar, allow it to harden and put it in the trash.

what a crazy, mixed up world we live in. I just read the other day that garbage disposals were "green." I can't remember why, but the story was crafted as if someone just found a way to turn water into gasoline.
now this. what's a socially responsible citizen of the world to do? Will I find answers at todays Presbyterian church service? Senator Obama, when you're president, will you tell me what to do with the coffee grounds in the bottom of my cup?

I mean, Episcopal. I was actually at an Episcopal church in Hoboken (the city that really wants to matter) -- the hows and why's are a bit of story -- and there was a raibow flag on the marquis that had the service times.
It was a beautiful building, however.

Try Charlotte. We are in a drought so we get fined if we wash our car or water our lawn. As a result we have conserved so much that the water utility is not taking in enough money. My reward for being a good citizen is going to be higher water bills. Thats right. Even though I am using less I will be paying more. Is this a great city or what?

Anyone from the liberal elite would tell you that’s how it should be... that is if you could get them to be honest for a moment.
That is a perfect world for the left. The average leftist longs to be told what to do, and when. The average elite lefty longs to tell everyone what to do and when.

$25,000 a day for a garbage disposal fine, and pay your property taxes so we can give the state away and pander the vote of any illegal alien who breaks into the country.
Pure perversion.

O.K. If you live in Raleigh, you are free to come to Fuquay Varina and use my disposal. WE all have to stick together in these hard times. Oh, and save your bacon grease for my dog.

And how exactly will they know if you repair your own disposer?
When this happens in Maryland (not if, WHEN) I’ll stockpile parts before it goes into effect so I can repair my disposer stealthily, in the dark of night...no one will witness my evil deed...those who know of it will never tell of it...MWAAAHHAAAAHHAAAA...

I have been told that all southerns save grease in jars to make gravy and stuff. I know this is North Carolina but that is considered in the south too isn’t it. I am sure there must be a book out there “101 uses for a jar of grease”.

I'm not a liberal, but there is some truth to the problems with the use of garbage disposers. I still wouldn't ban them or restrict the use of them.
I learned my lesson last fall when I had to fork over some $ 250 to a plumber to clean out my plumbing under my sink and way deep underground. I'm pretty sure that what clogged my home plumbing also could clog the pipes under the city.
I still have my garbage disposer installed under my sink, but I don't turn it on and I don't dispose any food into the sink. I use a strainer to collect any food particles that may get washed off plates and into the sink. I also have a dishwasher which grinds any food leftover on dirty dishes, but I make sure that all food particles are off the dishes before using the dishwasher.
I'm not trying to be politically correct or environmentally aware. I'm just looking out for my wallet and avoiding any further plumbing problems.

My reward for being a good citizen is going to be higher water bills. Thats right. Even though I am using less I will be paying more. Is this a great city or what? Problem was that the water company couldn't just raise its prices. That would have led to lower demand, but some people could have still washed their cars or watered their lawns.
I have a well. If I use too much water, then the well goes dry for a while.

It appears NC is getting the California effect. Californians ruined their state and couldn’t take it anymore, so they moved to Washington state and Oregon, bringing with them the same flawed ideas that ruined California. Good plan.
Looks like the NJ and NY libs are infesting NC.
It’s a shame to ruin such a beautiful place.

These are of course the people who always talk about “the sacred right to choose.”
Of course, when it comes to any subject other than whether or not to kill your baby, they won’t allow any “choice” at all on anything.
