AMHERST - In the fall, Select Board Chairman Gerald S. Weiss read a story about an Amherst restaurant worker who was deported to her native El Salvador after being involved in a Northampton accident.
He doesn't want that to happen here and wants the town to adopt a bylaw that would protect non-U.S. citizens.
Weiss presented the proposal to the Select Board Monday night and the board will discuss whether to support it at a future meeting. Town Meeting would ultimately decide whether to adopt the change.
The bylaw proposal follows a Town Meeting resolution adopted in 2002 that asked town employees, including police, to refrain from helping or cooperating "with investigations, interrogations or arrest procedures that are judged to be in violation of individuals' civil rights or civil liberties" as specified in the U.S. Constitution.
Residents presented the resolution after the USA Patriot Act allowed the FBI and CIA more authority to engage in wiretapping, e-mail monitoring and other surveillance methods in the agencies' mission to capture terrorists.

So is anyone surprised this is the billboardI mean (foreign) car, that Amherst Select board Chair Gerry Weiss drives? Businesses in town center have to pay Amherst $350 annually for sandwich board sign permits.
But not Mr. Weiss for this rolling sign: Enlarged Photo
FYI, that Camry was made in Tennessee.
And it’s “American” enough to be allowed to race in NASCAR.
I’m not Larry Kelly. Yell at him ;-)
Hey, I worked in and ran a business in Amherst from 1988-1991. Yeah, they are libs. But knock it off on the auto industry. I own a 2005 Camry, built by the good folks of Georgetown , KY. And it’s a hell of a better car than anything Detroit spits out.
Yell at him.
how do you know that is his car? I think Gerald S. Weiss needs to look for a new job
For his poor choice of stickers, yes. You're the one who said "foreign" car.
But yes, I hate Amherst, Northampton and the entire Pioneer Valley as much as any real American.
LOL! This in a college town with 25,000 students!
I'm not Larry Kelly.
He lives in Amherst.
It's not a city. It's a smallish town.
Larry goes to all the Select Board meetings!
Gee, has F.P. gone downhill?
It's not about the car!!!!!
Are you typying while tipsy?
Why are you fixated on the word foreign car which I didn't mention.
I linked to Larry Kelly. For the 1000th time I'm not Larry Kelly. I'm a female seasoned citizen!
I aplogize for my curt remarks. No one is actually reading the article. I thought it would be funny to post Larry Kelly's photo of the car and his comments which I now regret.

These people flaunt laws they don’t like. But when they’re mugged or robbed or their child is killed by an illegal alien, their perspective changes radically.
“FYI, that Camry was made in Tennessee.

Still a rice burner pal..designed in Japan....right where the dollar goes...and true race fans like me gave up NASCAR when they let toyota in...might as well let KIA run next year..
They will never see another dime from me...
Loving foreign cars must be a metrosexual type thing...
This is Larry Kelly- Do I have any messages?
I wish what you wrote were true, but sadly, they’ll have to be mugged a few more times before they wake up.
Too bad everyone in Amherst thinks you're crazy.
Aren't you just precious? I drive a Toyota because it does the job for the money. And employs American workers. And because I own stock in the company.
Your way of thinking died in the '90s.
No need. I understand where you're coming from.
