A longtime Republican district fell to the Democrats Saturday when a wealthy businessman and scientist snatched former House Speaker Dennis Hastert's congressional seat in a closely watched special election. Democrat Bill Foster won 52 percent of the vote compared to 48 percent for Republican Jim Oberweis. With 565 of 568 precincts reporting, Foster had 51,140 votes to Oberweis' 46,270.

Thank you for this great post. I can't tell you just how sick and disgusted I am at some of the people here who absolutely refuse to see that while McCain might not be the most desireable candidate, that he is light years better than Hillary or Obama and wouldn't cause nearly as much damage to this country as either of those two. It's also amazing that they don't realize that their guys have already lost, they didn't get the support needed to get to this point and that continuing to support any of them in this election is an exercise in futility and naivety.
Isn’t Oberweis a strong conservative too? Even worse of a defeat, but IL is just too liberal to bother with.
I think running primaries in the most liberal state early on guarantees a moderate/liberal candidate. I believe McCain will lose in the end. The McCain strategy is interesting though. He plans to run in areas that are not traditional Repub states...California etc. I heard this on several Sunday programs. Those of us in Free Republic sort of knew this. McCainiacs have been telling us that we don’t matter in this election. We will see I guess. I think McCain is drinking the kool-aide-his dream election would be one where conservatives don’t matter. I think all the speculation about a conservative VP is nonsense. You can’t run the kind of campaign McCain intends with a consevative on the ticket-assuming the media has it right.
btt
Ask any California conservative if they think Arnold has been good for California or the Republican Party. The answer is no. Some are on the record as saying they think a Dem would have done less damage in both areas.
Good point. I had nothing against Kirk Humphreys- he was a good Mayor- but Tom Coburn was clearly the better candidate.
“Try and win without us.”
Well, if the loony Ann Coulter crowd can’t put George Allen, Rick Santorum, J.D. Hayworth, Jim Talent, and Paul Ehrlich over the top, even on their own turf, perhaps they’re more trouble than they’re worth.
I think McCain should run right up the middle and put states like New Jersey, Minnesota, and Washington in our column.
Excuse me, I meant Robert Ehrlich, not the apocalyptic enviro loon.
California doesn’t have a foreign policy. California’s leaders don’t meet with other world leaders to discuss national security issues. California’s leaders aren’t responsible for every US military member in harms way. California’s leaders have no say in our federal tax rate.
Frankly, when it comes to an election as important as this one is, I don’t give a damn about what is good for the Republican Party, I care about what is good for this country, and when the only real choices at this point are McCain, Hillary, or Obama, the choice is obvious and should be to every sane thinking person.
Could it be too that IL is punishing the GOP because Hastert failed to live up to his commitment to serve a full two-year term? The same could happen this spring in the Baton Rouge district vacated by Richard H. Baker.
IL though is so liberal, who knows?
Ia Foster a clone of Obama?
Hastert said he was defending “the institution” as much as a Democrat colleague. He did support some Republicans over the years too, many of whom were defeated.
who’s lester holt?
Agreed.
And don't forget the crossdressing neo-cons.
Similar is not *same*. After all, one could say a Republican is 'similar' to a Conservative, but they are worlds apart.
You decried his spending policies and then listed some domestic programs when you know good and well that the budget deficit and the extra spending that exists was cause and effect of the things that I listed not the domestic policies that he implemented.
Only because YOU said so... enough said.
and the ideologues.... lets not forget them...
Nice try, but I actually wrote:
He's tried to compete with the Dems on spending programs.
That refers to the programs I listed (e.g., prescription drug plan, No Child Left Behind....), not to any legitimate expenses dealing with the War on Terror. Unless you think the Dems were the ones leading the charge for fighting Militant Islam and Bush was only playing catch-up ball.
