I have to ask this question. A lady who I work with likes to listen to her soaps over the TV audio on her radio. She asked me that after NTSC broadcasts are stopped in February 2009, will she still be able to get channels 2 thru 13 audio. I told her no, I'm assuming the analogue TV sound will cease to be broadcast as well but I'm looking for a definite answer. Am I right is assuming her TV audio radio will be no good after 2009?
There will be no audio either.
The spectrum will be auctioned for other uses.
That’s correct - the analog audio will stop when stations stop broadcasting the analog tv video. Whether it will happen precisely on that date across the board remains to be seen.
Rats. 87.7 brings in channel 6 and for me that meant I could listen to the NFL games if stuck in the car on Sunday afternoons.
I know the band from 760 to 800 megacycles (approx) will be shifted to other uses but I do know that some HDTV stations will still use the VHF channels (2 - 13) once the switchover is made.
You are correct, no audio and no video because the existing transmitters will be turned off next Feb. The only way to receive off-air TV will be with a set with a HT tuner, an external HD tuner, or via cable or satellite.
Both the audio and video will be digital, but not necessarily HD.
Your correct IMHO.
Use your favorite search engine and search for “usb” “hdtv” and you will find fairly inexpensive devices that will plug into your computer and allow you to pickup local HDTV channels (audio and video). Some also will pickup regular NTSC channels as well as FM radio.
NFL? We’re worried whether Aubrey really fathered Heather’s baby or if it was the alien she experienced in what seemed to be a dream! And, if Dr. Scopes is really his own uncle or whether Laura doped his drink at the Club and he had a hallucination about that tryst with his grandma when time was suspended due to the stroke!
TV audio will be gone too. The audio channels are narrower, but are right next to the video ones.
I thought that the government would back down on the 2009 thing. However, they got greedy and SOLD the frequencies!(like they “owned” them to begin with!). So, the deal is done. Analog TV and every radio that now says “TV Audio” will be worthless on that band.
Remember, many cable boxes and satellite boxes will, ironically, keep providing analog signals to the old TV’s. It is only broadcast TV through an antenna that is impacted.
I use to watch hurricane information on a 12v TV during hurricanes. I guess I’m stuck with radio now. Wonder if the “Powers that be” thought of that. (I’m sure they don’t care)
I'd say yes, considering it's been mostly no good for a number of years! :)
It won’t work either. The audio uses the same analog frequency as the video and that too will therefore be shut off.
I don’t yet have an HDTV but I do have a PC card that gets digital TV signals. I have a set of rabbit ears that gets all but one Baltimore station and all but two Washington stations (one of which I don’t get is Univision which I couldn’t care less about) and that’s inside a building 19 miles from DC and 18 miles from the Baltimore towers. And a cheap antenna.
Get me a decent indoor antenna and I could probably get them all.
And it cost $55.
Being stuck in your car and listening to the Eagles game is a nightmare .The FCC is doing you a favor .
Does everyone realize that during national emergencies, there will be no TV! Without 110vAC, no TV will work.
