To the GOP's self-righteous Purists

If there's a single thread that runs through the e-mails I receive from peevish Republicans, it's that none of the current candidates possesses the conservative purity of Ronald Reagan. One could almost get the idea that Dutch was betrayed by Pontius Pilate and crucified on Calvary. But that wasn't exactly the case. The fact of the matter is that Gov. Reagan gave Gov. Jerry Brown a run for his money – or should I say our money? – when it came to raising taxes here in California. But, in spite of the additional revenue, he was responsible in large part for the streets of our cities being turned into public latrines by the unwashed, the unwanted and the insane when, to save a few bucks, he oversaw the closing of California's mental hospitals. He also signed the nation's most liberal abortion bill. Although he had a change of heart a scant six months later, one never hears him condemned for flip-flopping ...

What truly confounds me are those cuckoos who would prefer to see such socialists as Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama win the election than to sully themselves by voting for a Republican who was only their second or third or even fourth choice. To them I say, before proving that you place your own ego gratification above what's best for America, keep in mind that most of the Supreme Court justices are in their 70s or even, in the case of John Paul Stevens, fast approaching 90. Do you really want one of those two Democrats stacking the Court for the foreseeable future? Presidents come and go, but justices go on seemingly forever. Kennedy and Scalia have been on the bench since Reagan put them there. Stevens, for heaven's sake, was appointed during the ...

McCain is understandably not popular with conservatives. All of this constant vitriol isn’t going to change a thing.

As I’ve stated numerously, my friends who support McCain ought to suck it up a bit and give their conservative brethren a little space to breath in before they start telling them what they should do or how they should feel about it.

Last month I was in “I’ll never vote for McCain” mode. Now, I realize that it’s probably my only option, even if he kicks us in the teeth again by picking a right of center running mate. Hoepfully, he won’t, but if he does what can I do? Vote for Obama? No.

I agree with you that “optimisim” is a conservative trait, but I will give those who are unhappy with McCain their due. They have a right to be annoyed. I happen to think this is a fine venue for venting one’s spleen. I’m agitated and there are others just like me. Now, I can feel a little better about voting for a guy who wants to give illegal aliens a free ticket to this country and all the optimism and blessings that it provides. All the social security that I’ve paid into since I was 12 years old.

I’m not allowed to be angry?!?!?

Personally, I think this attitude of telling people what and how they should feel is a symptom of liberalism. I find it to be more annoying than the prospect of votin for someone that I really dislike.

I’ll vote for McCain. Now why don’t you give your FReeping friends a little space to cuss and spit in.

You McCaniacs really need to stop with the "perfect candidate" accusation.

On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being a pure conservative and 1 being pure left:

Reagan ran as a 10 and governed as an 8 - and I voted for him.
Bush Sr. ran as an 8 and governed as a 5 and I voted for him.
Bush Jr. ran as a 7 and governed as a 6 and I voted for him.

McCain is running as a 4 and will govern as an _____.

Does that explain the problem so many conservatives have with your candidate? We are not seeking perfection, we just don't want to support a moderate liberal running as a conservative.

IIRC, our last encounter was unduly contentious because you decided to go after Reagan in Burt Prelutsky style. You people need to stop trashing Reagan in order to legitimize your dumb political points.

I’m no McCain lover, and I’m voting for him.

Me too. You've got to play the hand you've been dealt.

Bravo! Bravo! I’m sick to death of those who equate a vote for McCain as some sort of patriotic purity test.

Thank you for your service.

"liberal Dem"

Is that before or after a wmd hits an American city because the lib Dem prez thought he or she could negotiate with terrorists? McCain has some goofy ideas in sync with the Dems, but I would bet Republicans could still rein him in on those things. Remember Harriet Miers? Remember the Immigration Bill? Both were Republican initiatives. Both were stopped in their tracks by stiff opposition from Republicans, not Dems.

Oh well. We told them we didn’t like Amnesty. Oh wait, that’s right Amnesty isn’t Amnesty. I forgot.
In that case it’s not that I won’t vote for McCain it’s just that I won’t vote for McCain.

My child is serving in Iraq right now (third tour) and believe me no one is more concerned about her welfare than me and her mother.

I can't stand those keyboard warriors who try to equate my unwillingness to support McCain as being disloyal the troops.

I’ll pray for your family. And please thank your daughter from me for her service.

The only thing the McCain people have to sell is mindless fear. They know their candidate can’t stand on his own merits.

You may be interested to know that according to an article in the Dallas Morning News, only 46% of military members responding to a Military Times poll in 2007 identified themselves as Republican, down from 60% in 2004, and the lowest number since the Military Times began taking the poll. I guess to the McCainiacs that makes 52% of the military un-American traitors.

. It was BROWN, NOT REAGAN, who opened Agnews and other state hospitals, letting the psychos out

I thought it was jimmah - I remember him saying that they should 'have their rights' - he also let in the 300,000+ float-boaters from Cuba, which Castro loved - laughing as he loaded them with Cuba's prisoners and mental institution inmates.

Carter adored Castro -

Why? Because if you don’t, you will get the greater of two evils. Don’t like it? Sorry, that’s reality.

Evil is still evil. Sorry, that's just reality.
