Police: 'You fit the profile'

By BRENDAN J. LYONS Senior writer

First published: Sunday, March 2, 2008

ALBANY-- The cops in the marked patrol car had circled through West Hill a couple times keeping an eye on their female target.

They were part of the Street Drug Unit, an aggressive squad assigned to help rid Albany's neighborhoods of drug dealers and addicts blamed for much of the city's problems.

It was early evening and already dark when the patrol car's emergency lights flashed in the rearview mirror of Lisa Shutter's Mitsubishi sedan on Quail Street, just off Central Avenue.

Police records show the officers called out a "Signal 38" to alert a dispatcher they were onto something suspicious and about to pull someone over. They would later write in a report that they had pulled her over for "failure to signal," although no ticket was issued, according to police records shared with the Times Union.

The actions of police in the minutes that followed would end in controversy rather than with an arrest. They would also leave Shutter, a 28-year-old single mother from Ravena, shaken and angry after one of the officers allegedly inserted his finger into Shutter's vagina on a public street during an apparent search for drugs.

If this is true, and I have little reason to doubt it, the police department, from the top down, needs to be fired, prosecuted and jailed for 99 years to life. There can be NO excuse for such behavior, yet such things are becoming altogether TOO COMMONPLACE. It’s as if our new masters are letting us know what’s in store for us when their consolidation of power over us is complete. Such things seem to happen DAILY and NOTHING happens to the perps.

But there seems to be a growing contingent of citizens who are altogether too willing to trade MY freedom for THEIR illusion of security. It is chilling to think that this sort of moron, whom I gave well over twenty two years of my life to defend, God help me, wants to spit in my face and tear up the Constitution for the United States so that they can feel like they have some sort of security… God help this nation because we are in dire straits if we get too many morons and the requisite gummint agents all too willing to assume a power and authority NOT THEIRS to take, in response to the weak-kneed morons (who probably don’t have two brain cells to rub together BETWEEN THEM.

Yup. Welcome to the paramilitary police of today. Comply or be tazed, shot, roughed up and your rights (don’t ask about your rights, what are you, a ‘patriot’ or an ACLU guy?).

Just let me put my finger up your cooch to check for drugs, and we’ll get you on your way.

Sick bastards. They ought to be able to sue him directly and take all his assets instead of forcing the taxpayers to pay for this cops’ actions.

It is my considered opinion that the jackasses involved here need to come clean... and, to my mind, nothing is more cleansing than a nice LONG bath in a vat of 450 degree oil... dipping them in an inch or two at a time so as to prolong the process and ensure a THOROUGH cleansing.

In other instances, the internal affairs reports are so poorly organized and investigated the board has had trouble reaching decisions and often sends them back for more investigation.

Which does not seem surprising to me, though it seems to be tendered as a complaint in the article. The board may not know who to believe in cases with contradictory claims, and getting the facts right though very important is not always going to be possible.

You’re welcome. Mostly it was an honor and privilege. Mostly.

Truer than you kow.

Been watching "Jericho"? Chilling and all too possible.

I think that may be a bit overboard. I think suing their personal assets off and putting them in jail for a period of time would be good.

I think if society adopted the approach that a cop could be personally sued and potentially lose everything, plus face jail time if they are abusing their power like this, it would make some of these cops not do it.

If the allegation is true, it seems security is not exactly what he wanted to feel.

I have seen plenty of people screaming "police brutality" on C.O.P.S. who were obviously full of it.

I don't know the facts of this case. I know what the woman is saying. Maybe she is right. Maybe she is full of it.

But I am not going to "profile" either the cops or the woman just yet.

Was he looking for crack?

The cops are definitely scumbags in this situation, but it sounds like the young lady might have been up to no good.
Unfortunately, it hard to tell since the story is so poorly written. The author has no problem going into detail about the cops involved but there’s no mention if the young lady has a job. Although the author is careful not to tell the whole story, it appears she was driving around in a poor black neighborhood- ostensibly to pick up her white girlfriend.
