The next president may be stuck with more problems in Iraq than Bush ever faced.
The next president, it now seems likely, will inherit a situation in Iraq that's as dreadful as any time since late 2006, before the troop surge and Gen. David Petraeus' new set of strategies.
Three stories in today's papers forebode grimness.
First, as is widely reported, Iraq's three-man presidential council vetoed a law that called for provincial elections in October. Mike McConnell, President Bush's director of national intelligence, called the veto "somewhat of a setback"an understatement of staggering proportion.
When the parliament passed that law two months ago, Bush and his supportersincluding Republican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCainheralded the vote as a major sign of reconciliation among Iraq's sectarian factions and thus a vindication of the surge. The point of the surge, as Gen. Petraeus and others have said, was to create enough security in Baghdad that Iraq's political leaders could get their act together. The vote suggested some accommodation might be in the offing. The veto dashes those hopes.
As Richard Oppel and Khalid al-Ansary report in the New York Times, the veto isn't a whim that might be reversed with some suasion. Rather, it reflects a serious power struggle not only between Sunnis and Shiites, but also among the various Shiite parties.

Total BS, but wouldn’t it be nice if we kept to an aggressive MidEast policy and planned to topple or at least seriously cripple the enemies such as Iran, Syria? Not doing so is risking a future quagmire.
Bunch of BS artists.
And no, I did not read the entire article. Certainly not since I have to catch up on my Cartoon Network reviews too.
This is just more leftist defeatism designed to weaken America’s resolve in the WOT. Everyone knows the Surge is Succeeding and military victory in Iraq is just around the corner (maybe this summer). The LIEberals want us to lose, then blame President Bush and the Republicans. That ain’t gonna happen.
Now the use of a perfectly legal option in a legally-elected government is the straw they’re grasping at to salvage their dearly-desired disaster? That would be funny if it weren’t so pathetic.
Well, B.S. Obama didn’t vote for the war.
So liberals have to start their Chicken Little outcry once more to get the Great Obama elected.
The situation in Iraq won’t be so bad. The situation with Iran will be.
So what does an Obama do? Withdraw, of course. Let the Iranians fight it out with the Iraqis, Afghanis, Saudis, Kuwaitis, and everyone else.
More BUNK from the over educated dopes who write this trash... get a life...go teach kindergarten where some folks there might believe you.
Now that the military situation has somewhat stablilized, I think we should start building as many McDonalds and Wal-Marts as we can all over the country. Pump in 20 million worth of coupons and get a consumer economy going. No culture can resist the temptations of Western consumerism. Tents and camel soup just can’t compete with hambergers, coca-cola, blue jeans and Elvis. ;-)
“Welcome to the Quagmire”
Giggity.
come on Barack Adolf Hussein Obama is going to go over there, sit down with all of the leaders and sing kumbya-so everyone can relax
